No, not at all.

Only a fool would deny that humans evolved from apes. If we’re at the top of the evolutionary ladder at this point, that’s fine with me.

I certainly can’t rule out evolution, millions of years in the future, relegating man (humans) to a lesser level. I don’t think that evolution is “done or complete” in any way.

Brian1946's avatar

Hell no.

I enjoy the thought of being an elderly, physically-challenged, not-so-great ape. If someone disagrees with that and insists that I’m great, then they’ll get no argument from me. ;-)

ragingloli's avatar

It is insulting.
To apes.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I take some comfort in the reality when I have a boss acting like an asshole.

We didn’t evolve from apes @elbanditoroso. We had a common ancestor. We broke from whatever that was millions of years ago and evolved alongside modern apes.

JLeslie's avatar

No. But, I wouldn’t say humans are apes. Evolved from apes , or common ancestor, is just fine, but an ape is an ape, and a human being is a human being. Throughout the animal kingdom, including human beings, we can observe various behaviors that are shared by different species.

Dutchess_III's avatar

We are a species of ape, @JLeslie. We share 98% of our genes with chimpanzees.

Seek's avatar

Not at all. We are apes. We’re apes with cell phones.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I’m not. But some are.

GA @ragingloli .

JLeslie's avatar

I admit to not remembering all the correct terminology or details. Anyway, it doesn’t matter to me at all regarding whether I’m offended or not.

I realized only about 7 years ago that some Christians see animals very different than humans, even down to the soul.

At one funeral I attended a man speaking at the funeral, maybe he was a preacher, I don’t know, he sounded like one, spoke about the deceased going to heaven, but animals don’t. I found that a shocking thing to say. Why even bring that up? I also had Mormon woman I knew who when the topic of evolution came up she seemed almost disgusted to imagine we were related to apes.

I’m not sure why they are seemingly appalled by the idea? I understand why they may not accept evolution as a valid scientific theory, I just don’t understand why they are offended or disgusted.

ragingloli's avatar

@JLeslie
They believe that humans are a special creation of their god, in an exalted position above the animals, with the divine providence to rule over them.
Suggesting that they are on a similar level as animals, contradicts their religiously fuelled sense of unwarranted self importance.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yes you are @MrGrimm888!

cookieman's avatar

Nah. They’re just monkeying around.

MrGrimm888's avatar

What’s up @Dutchess_III ?

Brian1946's avatar

@MrGrimm888

Perhaps @Dutchess_III thinks you were replying to @Seek and denying that you’re a great ape, rather than replying to the OP and denying that you feel defensive about being referred to as a great ape.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Ah. Thanks. I didn’t read all the comments above.

My bad. Yes. I was referring to the question. Yes. I think it’s an easy assessment, to see they are our ancestors. Even without DNA.

Seek's avatar

The other great apes are our cousins, not our ancestors. Chimpanzees and bonobos have been evolving as a separate species for just as long as we have. Our evolution simply took a different direction.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Yes. Ancestors was not the right word, I suppose.

I believe that we evolved from apes. Hopefully that’s better.

JLeslie's avatar

@ragingloli What shocked me so much was I know a lot of Christians who love their pets, and I was rather floored that they would comment on animals not being able to get into heaven. I bet a lot of people hope to see their beloved dogs again when they die if they believe in an afterlife.

Besides that, why bring it up at all? We are there to honor and mourn a woman who lived with cancer for years, who suffered a lot, and who died young, who left a husband and three kids, and this guy decides to talk about how animals won’t go to the same place that she is? It’s very weird to me to even mention it.

Seek's avatar

@MrGrimm888 – We are still apes. But yes, all Great Apes evolved from a common ancestor. Of course, if you go back far enough, we share a common ancestor with bananas, too.

Berserker's avatar

Mama got an ass like a monkey look like King Kong! Or wtv that Pit Sean guy said.

MrGrimm888's avatar

@Seek . Yes ma’am. I agree with you.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Do you actually know anyone who takes offense at the notion?

Brian1946's avatar

@stanleybmanly

I can’t really say that I do, but I did meet a woman who dissed evolution. I wouldn’t be surprised if she took offense, even if I told her she was the gorilla my dreams. ;-)

zenvelo's avatar

Nope, I am not offended. I aspire to be as compassionate and caring as the apes.

Sneki95's avatar

Nuh-uh. One look at most apes (and some people around me, at least) is enough to see that we’re some cousins. and I rarely get ofended anyways.

rojo's avatar

No. Facts don’t offend. They just are.

Patty_Melt's avatar

I have known people who take offense. I am related to people who think it is pure poppycock. My dad is gone now, but he got roaring mad anytime he heard the subject of evolution come up.

Dixon's avatar

Only if you meant Grape Apes.

JLeslie's avatar

I’m with @Seek about the bananas. I love the idea that all living things, including plants, are made from the same genetic materials, just in longer chains, different orders, it’s fascinating. ATCG. We are all connected in that way to all living things.

Dutchess_III's avatar

We’re all made of stardust!

@stanleybmanly Oh my goodness yes I know people who would become very angry over the idea! Fundamental Christians. We’re no longer close, though.

tinyfaery's avatar

Nope. I’m embarrassed for the other apes.

Patty_Melt's avatar

Of course, some of us have more generations of separation than others.

Pachy's avatar

No—and especially not when it’s Trump they’re referring to!

He’s a Great Great Ape.

LostInParadise's avatar

Maybe not so great

Gremlin's avatar

Nope. I think it’s accurate. We’re all animals, the fact that we deny it is proof that we should get off the high horse. It’s pretty juvenile in my opinion.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Who is this “we” @Gremlin? Certainly not anyone on this thread.

sone's avatar

No

cookieman's avatar

I was in Washington DC recently (chaperoning my daughter’s class) One day, we were at the Natural History Museum. I was looking at the prehistoric skulls of early man in the evolutionary section. Woman stands next to me and lets out a “Hmm.”

“Fascinating”, I said.

“I don’t believe any of this mumbo jumbo”, she goes on, “we all know we came from the lord.”

We were literally surrounded by artifacts. By evidence.

This was the same day as the March for Science.

rojo's avatar

^^ Faith and science can both exist but it takes an open mind; something this woman obviously did not have.

Patty_Melt's avatar

No, but I am TERRIBLY offended when they refer to us as a grape ape. REALLY pisses me off.
@cookiemen blink blink I can’t even respond to that.

JLeslie's avatar

Grape ape? That’s a typo right?

cookieman's avatar

@Patty_Melt: That was pretty much my reaction.

ragingloli's avatar

I thought you meant Rape Ape.

JLeslie's avatar

@Patty_Melt I still don’t get it. Who refers to us as grape apes? Maybe you mean great apes?

@cookieman I can understand why someone who believes humans suddenly appeared when God decided to create us doesn’t see those fossils as evidence. I don’t think for them the question is necessarily whether those fossils are real, but whether we evolved from the beings that left behind those fossils.

JLeslie's avatar

I know what the Grape Ape is.

cookieman's avatar

Yes, but do you love him?

Dutchess_III's avatar

“Grape ape.” Yes, that made me laugh! I was a bit old for cartoons in 1975, but I still like that show. I love him @cookieman.

Patty_Melt's avatar

I thought I was being funny. Sorry.

Dutchess_III's avatar

It was cute, @Patty_Melt!
