If it is real science with clearly defined right and wrong answers, like maths, physics, chemistry, or biology, then not much.
But if it is subjective nonsense like philosophy, theology, or economics, all the leeway in the world.

@RedDeerGuy1, where I work, and I’d hope this is becoming standard, there are moderation policies in place to ensure consistency across grades. So a marker marks a block of papers and then a second marker will mark some of those papers to ensure both are in agreement on the feedback and mark allocated. The class marks are then moderated by the course convenor to vet the marks and ensure the results are consistent across time. You shouldn’t suddenly have one class that gets really high or really low marks. If that happened it would be investigated. At my university, all the marks then go to a board that looks at the marks and ensures these processes have been followed. This process can result in marks being amended if discrepancies are found.

Students will often challenge grades. If they do the original marker will consider their own work and provide more feedback and amend the mark if they’ve made an error. If the student still feels their mark is unfair, they can appeal and the convenor or someone higher will evaluate the mark and process. And there are other processes that can come into play too.
