I thought USB drives were all solid state. Heat comes from motion or resistance.

Why is the metal tip hot?

Here’s the link that tells you why and a word of caution if it’s getting too hot because of defective ports.

Solid state devices are essentially made of wires that get hot. Tiny, tiny wires, fine little traces of metal printed on a substrate.

Heat comes from motion or resistance (emphasis my own). You answered your own question.
