What should I get for my 52 year old mom's Christmas birthday?

My mom is kind, thoughtful, and has a lot of stuff. She likes gardening, giraffes, and reading, to name a few, and she is very active in speaking out for the LGBT community. She shares a birthday with Christmas, so I’m hoping to get her two things, but I don’t want either of them to take too much time since I have a lot of other things going on.

How much do you want to spend?

Get her something for the garden, such as a rose bush, or a small tree.

When are you giving her the present? It is August, so buying gardening stuff for December is silly. But one year I gave my mom a gift certificate for a bare root rose that would be available at the nursery in January. It was her favorite, and was growing buds well by Easter that year.

Why not take her shopping for something she really wants or needs at her favorite store? My mother always loved that kind of gift.

Oh, and include a nice lunch or dinner.

An Amazon gift certificate.

Gift bought from a shop kind of equals to “Money”. I prefer something needs time and effort. That can show your sincerity, love to her, or something I can not indicate the exact and proper word.

I think @Gideon2017 means to give something from the heart. Something that takes thought and not just a store bought item. And that’s what I think too.

A personally made coupon book for free hugs and other stuff like chores or an hour to listen to her at 3am.

@chyna That is exactly what I thought.

@Jeruba That is odd.

Ghost of xmas past…

Does she have one of the new HDTV’s?

@si3tech, not necessarily. At first glance, I thought, “That sounds like a possible spam setup.” Probably that was because Christmas is so far off and the name might tie into a product. But some people do sign on, post one question, and disappear without any explanation.

Anyway, I looked at the user profile before any responses were posted, and the user was gone already.

Definitely get her two different presents, one for Christmas, one for her birthday. Does she like music, plays, museums, dance? A visit to a well-known garden in your area? Tickets to some event might be nice. You could even go with her and make it an evening.

A formal portrait of you might please her.

I second @zenvelo‘s suggestion of a tree. What kind of climate does she live in?

Also, I agree with @marinelife that you should give her something for her birthday separately. But make it at an experience. Consider taking her to a play, a show, a gallery opening, a restaurant, etc. Something that she can enjoy an will create lasting memories.

Gifts are just an expression of showing love and respect towards the person you’re giving them to…

I would suggest you do something for her instead, something which she would’ve otherwise never expected you to do in a million years…! And that would be the greatest gift..

I think a consistently great gift that is not very expensive (and therefore can be the main gift or can be an “extra”) is a framed photo. A photo of your mom, you and your mom, the family at some event (picnic, party, etc.), your pet or pet from the past, or anything that you think will make your mom smile, put it in a frame and she will be thrilled.
