Has anyone seen the Ron Reagan commercial advertising some organization of atheists and agnostics promoting the separation of church and state? It ends with the disclaimer “I’m Ron Reagan and I’m not afraid of burning in hell.

@RedDeerGuy1 , Did the test ask if you believe in God, and did you answer no? Did it ask if we have moral obligations, and did you say yes? That would most likely make you a secular humanist. They would have to ask a some other questions to determine if you might be a Buddhist, since Buddhists do not believe in God. I am not going to look at the test, because I don’t want to give my email address.

You can definitely start your own church and appoint yourself as a clergyman. To distinguish your organization, you can talk about time travel. Getting people to listen to you and give you money is another matter. Don’t count on it.

The Sunday Assembly organization brings people together and tries to perform the activities of a religious organization without religion. I don’t expect it to catch on.

From a personal standpoint I believe that people are what they choose to make of themselves. In some instances there are aspects of religion that both embrace our actions and in some cases can even modify them but these actions and beliefs come from within the individual and not from a belief in the religion itself.
It makes sense to think that religion derives its morality and ethical tenets from those who make up a particular religious sect otherwise you have to believe that religion is a living entity that existed before there were people and that people are born evil or at a minimum a blank slate without any moral compass. Which, I guess, is what the faith of those who believe all morality is derived from their religion actual espouse.
