Why would the moderators delete that thread they just deleted here?

So, there was a thread where we were discussing site policy and recent moderation actions.

It just disappeared? Really?

Apparently, the mods couldn’t handle that, and so deleted it?

That’s certainly how it looks to me.

Please tell me I’m wrong.

Fluther is one of my most respected sites on the Internet.

This is the first point where I’m really starting to question the integrity and wisdom of the mods. Please make some sort of statement, at least. Trying to shut down our ability to discuss what’s going on is… ill-conceived, it seems to me, if that’s in fact what’s going on.

I’m pretty sure that is what just happened. I have seen other Q’s go away that mentioned the moderation practices.

I will get into the mind of the mods provided that the mods are the same people I think they are and guess that thread has a little two provocative title. Maybe the title needs to be changed a bit so that it sounds more objective.

I’m waiting to see whether this thread gets modded too…

The mods have lives and they don’t have time for this petty bs.

I know Fluther is not a democracy but it doesn’t seem very democratic when they can’t keep up a thread that may contain some constructive criticism or discussion about their tactics. I know some will say that it’s never been allowed but that doesn’t make it right.

[Mod says] The question you’re referring to was a duplicate of an earlier version. Rather than editing the first attempt, the OP chose to start a second thread. That’s against Fluther guidelines. If the OP decides to bring their first question up to Fluther standards, it will be available for everyone to comment on.

We’re definitely willing to discuss the site’s policy. Fluther is the sum of its members, not its mods – it’s our job to be in contact with the community. For general questions about policy, starting a Meta thread is fine.

As much as we want to answer questions though, we also very much need to protect user privacy. That’s why we’re reluctant to discuss specifics in a thread. However, anyone curious is always welcome to send us a message.

If anybody is on Facebook, there’s a secret group (secret means you won’t find it if you search for it and anything you post is invisible to anyone outside the group).

Sometimes we post interesting articles or photos, and sometimes we discuss what’s going on with Fluther.

The nice thing about the group iis that anything and everything can be discussed.

If anybody wants to be added, you can pm me your real name and I’ll add you, or pm someone else if you know they’re in the group and they can add you.

Oh, please, not another “I am outraged at the mods” thread.
Please PM @jca, so you can whine all you want about it with no consequences. I’m sure the most recently banned person is probably there, giving their (not necessarily objective) version of what happened.

In the meantime, let’s remember that the mods are volunteers, and that as often as they are vilified on a thread, that likely increases exponentially in PMs.

No whining from me, @canidmajor. Just facts. There are three sides to every story.

@longgone Thanks for explaining that. The reason I posted this thread was because several people were online there trying to figure out what was going on, and I thought starting to make some progress when the thread vanished.

@canidmajor I’m not “outraged at the mods”, and it doesn’t look to me like @jca was either.

canidmajor's avatar

That was not addressed at either of you, @Zaku, but at the ongoing attitude here that the users are owed explanations for every little thing. These questions come up again and again.

@Zaku Sure thing. Thanks for doing your part in keeping this discussion calm.

@canidmajor I just saw your response about the Facebook group. It’s been around for over 6 years. I think Auggie started it years ago, but it might have been a different jelly. It was not created to bitch, it was created so jellies could know each other and talk, and even see each other’s real life photos and persona, trusting we would all keep each other’s identity secret. We sometimes post topics, it’s all over the map what people post in there, but it’s a place we can be truly social, beyond a Q&A social on fluther, where it’s still limited to Q&A ideally. Sorry, some of us like each other, feel like friends, and wanted to be able to communicate like a group of friends at times.

Plus, if someone decides to stop participating on fluther for whatever reason, they still had the option to keep in touch on Facebook in a much more informal way.

“Secret” on Facebook is exactly what @jca said, it’s a category for a group. On Facebook a group can be open to the public, closed, or secret.

It’s so obvious that certain jellies are all geared up to dislike any answer some of us give at this point. The bias is load and clear.

That you find a problem with a social group on Facebook is beyond me. @jca offered openly on this thread to put jellies into the group.

That you find a problem with a social group on Facebook is beyond me.

It was recently used to bash me, so yeah, I had a problem. What astounded me was that I belonged to the group. If you are going to talk shit about a person you could at least make it private. Just sayin’.

Auggie didn’t start the group. I believe it was started by users long ago who are no longer active here and don’t even participate in the said fb group anymore because it became overrun by the people they were trying to escape.

just some facts I thought I’d share. I’m very sober, thank you. :)

^^Well, you’re in the group. So, I guess you joined because you wanted to. If you are who I think you are, I defended you. That thread was one of very few like that. You know that is not a group usually used for bashing if you have been there a long time. That’s not why it was created or why it has existed for years. One thread that got out of control because people got upset does not stain the whole idea of the group does it?

I don’t participate a lot in the Facebook group usually. I look at it when someone posts, I rarely do a status in there.
