Is Reddit losing its quailty?

“Great Question” (2points)

My friend a few years back recommended Reddit to me and I check in fairly often now.

I’ve since gotten into a few subreddits that are more specific to my interests. I always thought of Reddit’s subreddits as a more “serious” place for knowledge and feedback for specific topics.

Lately it seems to be more opposite…Trolls, memes, jokes, off topic banter, derailing the thread or topic into something else etc.

It is disappointing as I’ve had great results before and gained insight but lately just not the case.

What kind of subreddits are you subcribing to anyway?

If the subreddits aren’t too delicated to any serious topics (like AskReddit) then things like that are expected to happen, because the possible topics for a thread are too vast, and they aren’t meant to be serious anyway.

Maybe go for a subreddit for one specific serious topic instead?

@Mimishu1995 Actually you can place a [Serious] tag in that subreddit. I get your point though. But things that are specific niches or topics like finance, fitness, weightlifting, yoga, guitar, etc. I am talking about entire subreddit dedicated to that subject. I understand that certain parts of Reddit are all about memes, being funny and what not that’s fine for those subreddits.

But when it bleeds into the rest it is not funny or cute. Some do a good job of having mods and well placed rules. Others the rules exist but no real enforcement of them or if the meme and jokes are too good even if off topic will stay. Eventually I’ve seen it turn into a comedy show rather than what the thread was intended for originally.

I’ve only been on Reddit for few years maybe it has always been this way?

Did it ever have quality?
I always saw it as an off-brand 4chan.

@ragingloli Honestly I don’t know as I wasn’t there from the beginning with Reddit. Only been little over 2 years myself. When did you start using Reddit?

ragingloli's avatar

I have no reddit account.

@ragingloli How long have you been following Reddit then? Or do you not use or read it at all?

Reddit is more a platform for individual forums. Some are quite serious. The larger ones are well past the point of controlling banter.

@Muad_Dib I agree with that. The larger ones are on the verge of not being properly moderated if not already at that point.

I do find it concerning when the smaller and individual forums seem to be more relaxed as the overall tone of Reddit is shifting.
