I find the etymology of understand unsatisfactory to explain how the words “under” and “stand” can come together and be defined as to grasp the meaning of.

So many questions about this. Can a person overstand something? Can a person undersit something? It just doesn’t make any sense to me how the word understand came to mean what it does. And for lack of a better way to put it, I don’t understand how understand stands for what it’s supposed to mean.
