Things are beyond dismal, starting with the lack of anything resembling a stable government. You couldn’t build a plant without people literally stealing the bricks. Then there’s the total lack of infrastructure. Roads, power plants, sewers, water treatment plants—none of it exists.

Apple might just have the financial clout to build a stable working Somalia, but such a proposition would eliminate any chance of quarterly profits for decades. No corporation is going to sit still for that.

The labor might be cheap, but presumably they at least want a stable, functioning country to manufacture their wares in.

Most of the people are probably too malnourished or sick to work.

Or busy finding potable water.

Or not get raped or murdered?

They’re probably trying to stay away from countries that the US has been bombing the crap out of.
