Can raising or lowering ones intelligence and emotional intelligence affect mental illness?

Up or down? Would be easier to lower. Could boosting , or lowering, mental capacity help treat different mental illnesses? Also what about strength and fitness? Could developing mental and /or physical ability help or hurt wellness? What mental illnesses are worse for the intelligent? Should nutrition education be more of a key point in mental health then today?
