I used to take the flax oil, but it was expensive, and didn’t have the fiber part, which I wanted (the ground seeds do).
I have read up a bit about this subject and from what I’ve learned is that it is better to have the omega 3 in actual “food form” rather than by pill form. I switched to ground flaxseed (rather than whole, which goes through the body un-digested and the omega 3 doesn’t get absorbed), and I would either sprinkle it on cereal, or put it in a glass of water and just slurp it down, with a meal. Unfortunately, it starts to clump and get gummy very quickly with the glass of water technique, so you have to do it quickly, and stir and slurp.
The flavor of flax is pretty strong, not bad, but similar to the flavor of the skins of walnuts.
I ended up switching to raw shelled hemp seed hearts, which taste like pistachios. Much yummier, and still a good source of omega 3.
The hemp hearts can be sprinkled on cereal, waffles, or ice cream, but I just scoop out a Tablespoon and eat them, without water, because they have the same texture as chopped up pistachios or cashews.
I get my hemp hearts for super cheap at Trader Joe’s. $5.99 for a bag that lasts about 2 months. Whole Foods and other similar places carries it for double that price!

I also eat lots of walnuts, which are also high in omega 3.
I don’t get gas from any of these things, but I have been a vegetarian for 30 years, and eat tons of things that cause other people to have gas, such as broccoli, and beans.
If you get gas, try starting out with a smaller amount, at first, and take it with a meal, rather than by itself, then gradually add in more.
