Is it safe to take hormone tablets at menopause?

I am so confused as my sister-in-law started taking estrogen and progesterone tablets at 50 years old and she says she feels 100% herself now and says her Dr. said it was perfectly safe. My Dr. says you are taking a chance with cancers and other problems when you take hormone tablets after menopause and wouldn’t give me any. What’s the real answer?

All anyone here can do for you is google, so I did and this is what I found. I’d go with her doctor and ditch yours. There are side effects, of course. There are side effects of being alive.

It was my understanding that they had stopped recommending them in most cases some years ago because of the adverse side effects that the link points too. Unless they have better combinations now, I would not – and did not – take them. There are some natural and homeopathic relievers that some people have had success with such as soy and black cohosh.

I used a Hormone Replacement Therapy patch for 6 years, there is a risk factor but how much of one is debatable, for me, the benefits outweighed the possible risks. After 6 years I decided that my body needed a rest from it, I don’t think I will go back on it but never say never.

I would never fuck around with hormones.

I wanted to add that I was using HRT for symptoms of menopause.

@josie Hormones are the story of a woman’s life. Hormones to prevent pregnancy, hormones lost during menopause. I definitely “fucked with” hormones through out my adult life.

Do any of the ladies have personal experience with phytohormones of natural origin that really helped and were not a placebo effect.

My symptoms were never so severe that I looked to HRT or natural remedies. I just waded through it.

I don’t think I ever even went through menopause.

@Dutchess_III If you don’t get your period any more, you went through menopause.

I had a medically forced menopause as a result of cancer treatments 20 years ago (kind of an Insta-pause) which was very harsh. I took some phytoestrogens (doctor’s recommendation) and they helped ease some of the symptoms. I have no idea if there were side effects, my whole system was so out of whack from cancer and subsequent treatments.

My sister in law had many of the same symptoms I have…..not the night sweats but feeling crabby and foggy minded and less energy and less concentration and focus. Hormones took care of this for her and she took them for years then lessened the dose to very small after a while and still felt fine. One Dr. told me I was depressed and wanted to give me meds for that. I am not depressed but he wasn’t an ob/gyn just an MD. so what would he know about hormones. I don’t think it would hurt me to try them for 3 months to see if it would help. I am willing to do that my symptoms are bad enough.

FWIW I’ve heard that Prozac can help with menopausal symptoms.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@janbb, of course I went through menopause. I had 0 symptoms of going through it, though. I was 35 the last time I had a a period.

“I don’t think I ever even went through menopause.”

Fake news then, I guess!

Dutchess_III's avatar

I didn’t have any symptoms. Of course I went through menopause, but I have no idea when it happened. My comment was just tongue in cheek.

Anyone had extreme pain under foot at the onset of menopause. So painful to the point where it feels like you are walking on nails? Oh, and sudden itching at night. Every night at around the same time. Any of this sound familiar?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Ow. I wonder what would cause that @ZEPHYRA?

ZEPHYRA's avatar

Ι don’t know but if it’s hormonal then it’s a pretty rough deal.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yeah. That sounds horrible.
