If the Earth went out of orbit and is headed out of the solar system could any of us survive?

“Great Question” (3points)

Do they have a doomsday shelter for that? How much more advanced do we have to be to survive without the sun?

Just asking in social for fun.

In limited numbers, underground, powered by geothermal and nuclear energy.

despite @ragingloli ‘s optimism, the answer is no. There are currently no geothermal or nuclear rescue locations ready for use.

It isn’t only light and heat that would be problems. Think about gravity and how that would change as the earth spun out of control.

For that matter, it’s important to know HOW, in your scenario, the earth moved out of orbit in the first place. Did it collide with an asteroid and got pushed? That would change things too.

Another question: in your scenario, how much warning would earthlings have before this took place? One day- would be a fiasco. Thirty years- we could build things.

Bottom line is that there are far too many variables, and questions to be answered before a truly accurate answer could be given.

My gut feel is that the human race would last less than a week.

With Trump and his Space force leading the way!
To infinity and beyond,oh wait that was Buzz light year.
But in the real world so to speak once it left it’s orbit with the sun, I wouldn’t give it and it’s population more than a week or two tops.

The reason gvmt is moving forward with operation space force.
The first project to be funded will be a safe haven in time of crises. It was determined some time ago that hiding deep in a mountain range might not be good enough.

@ragingloli Maybe we would become the Morlocks and Eloi. Or Drow

No

No. We would all freeze in short order.

Like the crew of a nuclear submarine a few people could survive for a few months but the situation would be hopeless as the entire surface of the planet would be a bitterly cold, dark and lifeless desert.

Caravanfan's avatar

@ragingloli is correct. Given enough warning humanity could survive for awhile using Earth as a lifeboat. The trick wouldn’t be keeping warm, but growing enough carbon to keep us fed.

Humanity is doomed anyway—this would just make it a little quicker.

@Patty_Melt -is there any written evidence of what you wrote? that the first priority is a safe haven – or is that your belief?

Would anyone want to survive?

Yellowdog's avatar

People like me would survive, maybe even thrive. The planet would be frozen.

But I think most “Earth people”—that includes everybody on this website I think, would freeze to death,

elbanditoroso's avatar

@Yellowdog why would you survive? How?

ragingloli's avatar

@elbanditoroso
Probably has a makeshift “bunker”, that is only half submerged in the ground, with 10cm thin walls.

Like Indrid Cold. Some strains of people here are not from the soil of the Adamic line nor are we ‘out of Africa.’ The Earth has been ours as long as any of the others (Adamic) have been here. A frozen earth, trees encased in ice, dark rows of empty houses, eternal twinkling of starlight—stark beauty.

@elbanditoroso, lighten up gumbah, it was asked in jest.
