Amash was never a member of the GOP so he has NO party to leave!!! He ran & won as a conservative libertarian which in effect aligned his view with the Republican party; but he can say that he was Never one of them. I’ve been watching him since he first attacked trump & I am somewhat impressed. i don’t do Facebook so I can’t verify the truth to this; but, it has been claimed that he explains the reason for EVERY vote he has made on his FB page.
Amash is supposed to be considering running for President as a Libertarian in 2020 so he may have self serving motives for attacking trump so publicly. I’ve been somewhat impressed with what I’ve read about him so far but my gut is telling me that i need a lot more info on him before making such an important decision!!! Also, I’m still open to see what the Dems have to offer.
As to the question here, Amash can’t leave the GOP until he is a member of the GOP; however, IF he was, he has the right to leave anytime he becomes uncomfortable with the party. I don’t know who here is old enough to remember but Strom Thurmond was a Senator from SC who ran as a Democrat, later switched to being a Dixiecrat, & finally landed as a staunch Republican. He often switched mid-term. Still, many Dems continued to vote for him although he had turned his back on them.
I don’t see Amash saying he no longer aligns with the GOP party…simply that he can NO longer blindly follow their candidate!!! I have noticed that he’s no longer calling himself a conservative Libertarian…opting to say he’s a Libertarian with NO conservative/liberal designation. Could this be his way of courting anybody who no longer supports trump???
