Both sides stand throughout the game, singing songs of victory and mocking the other side. And they get stinking drunk on strong ale all the while. Occasionally, they riot.

By shouting, drinking Bovril, eating pies, and consuming too much alcohol. By singing songs abusing the opposing team and waving flags, scarves and banners. Remembering goals scored 25 years ago and remaining fanatically loyal despite 15 consecutive defeats. By urinating in public, being sick, beating up the wife when you get home and by getting arrested by the police.

Interesting & amusing that the most football related arrests due to incidents of violence before, during & after games occurs in Germany & Scotland the nationality of 2 of the responders here :D

Anyhow @KNOWITALL the game you mention is the opening game of the new premier league season for both clubs. Liverpool fans will be full of anticipation having just missed out on winning the league title to Manchester City & the Norwich fans will be equally happy because they were promoted from the Championship, the league below. Should be an easy home win which will almost certainly pass off peacefully, all grounds are very much family orientated.

Football fans are the same in every country. The lowest dregs of society, perpetually inebriated, no personal achievements whatsoever, so the only pride they can feel is of sports teams, whose achievements they have absolutely nothing to do with.
They are a close cousin to the nationalists and the racists, who take pride in the works of others, works that they lack any qualifications to create themselves, but which they claim as their own regardless, just because they share the same nationality or skin colour.

@KNOWITALL I mean yeah, drinking & fun with the family of course happens & lots of singing & chanting but the vast majority is good natured banter, adds to the atmosphere.

@ragingloli Really? That seems a bit harsh for enjoying a team sport. Over here, people from all paths often enjoy rooting for a team or athlete. Its not really my thing but I’ve enjoyed quite a few games for the experience and energy.

@ucme I get it. Last time at a STL Cards game we left some of the opposing team at the hotel intentionally, pretty funny. Some hijinks occurred, all harmless fun.

@KNOWITALL That’s what it’s all about, friendly rivalry. Most of us love the experience of attending a match because it’s great entertainment, even when leaving after the game, both sets of fans mingle & even have a drink together. Football doesn’t matter then, just folks generally getting on.
