I recently rented a car for a trip, and the car had some technology that my four year old CRV doesn’t have. It had alarms when you’d change lanes, if there was another car already in that lane, or a car coming into your lane. Very handy. I am still the great driver that I always was, but this was a little helper that I felt was really good to have. Same with backup cameras, which my car has and I think probably the majority of cars have now. If it saves a life, it’s a good thing. As the population ages, as the baby boomers get older and stiffer and maybe it’s harder for them to turn around all the way, and look, now with backup cameras it makes it a bit easier and definitely a lot safer.
Do these things make me a dumb driver? I don’t believe so. Do they make the car safer, whether I’m in my 20’s or my 70’s? Yes. So that’s a good thing.
Think of the technology that is now commonplace. Voicemail, computers, WiFi. At one time, someone old and crotchety thought of it as newfangled and unnecessary. Now, I’m betting 99.9% of the population doesn’t use an answering machine, because voicemail is given free with most phones. 99.9% of the population has used a computer and can do it with ease.
