Why did this woman seem so terrified?

“Great Question” (2points)

One of my favorite Halloween memories is having a passel of the grandkids here. This was was about 8 or 9 years ago. There was a knockin’ on der door. I opened it with a smile, a bowl of candy in my arms. The little girl, 5 or 6, looked at me, then looked around me, and there was a little kid’s Halloween party going on! She just brushed right passed me and came in the house!
I was like, “Oh! OK! Comon in !”
Her mom was just mortified. I told her it really wasn’t a problem and invited her to come on it. She looked at me in sheer terror and said “NO!” and kept hissing for her daughter to come to her.
I finally went and took the girl by the hand and mom scurried away with her. What did she think I was gonna do with the child?

What would you have done if you were that mom?

I’m sure she thought the child was imposing and thus being rude.

Are you implying that she might have assumed the child was in danger?

If so, I doubt it.

She may have thought you’d sell the kid to the Gypsies !

She seemed terrified @Josie. And of course it was rude but I wasn’t a bit upset. It’s our job to teach them manners because they aren’t born with them.
If it had been me I’d have come in and set some examples like “Thank you for inviting us in.”
I’d explain it all to the child later.

@Dutchess_lll You were a great mom. This woman was probably terrified because of something that happened in her past. Who knows why exactly?

She thought you were part of a Satanic child sacrifice ring….

It’s really impossible to know what the Mother was concerned about. You certainly didn’t do anything wrong.

If my daughter walked into someone’s house, someone I didn’t know, I think I’d be more concerned. Maybe terrified isn’t the right word. The woman was probably concerned that now her daughter is in the home of someone she doesn’t know, and she’d have to go in after her.

One time, when I lived in an apartment building, the little old lady across the hall opened her door and my cat ran into her apartment. He ran into her bedroom and under the bed. I was mortified because it meant I had to go running into her apartment after him. She didn’t think it was a bad thing but I still felt like he did something inappropriate, which he did LOL.

If it were my child, I would be very concerned about her running into a strangers house. A quick glance into your kid party would have set me at ease VS seeing dudes snorting coke on the table – far reaching example, I know. I would also want my child out as quickly as possible to have a talk with them about going into stranger’s homes. I would thank you for the offer but would have quickly left.

She thought you were going to kidnap her kid. I love children and am always talking to them in the store. Even when mom and dad are standing right there I’ll say something to the kid. Most parents freak out and become quite rude

Of course @jca2. Any mom would go in after the child. That’s why I invited Mom in too so she could see for herself. But she firmly refused and stood in the doorway hissing at her daughter to come to her. Daughter just ignored her. I finally went and took the child by the hand and led her to the door.
Mom snatched her hand away and about broke her neck getting her and the child down the steps and hurried away.

I would have done the same thing that mom did. I would not, and would not allow my child to, meander into a stranger’s house. Nope.

But...@Sagacious...she did. She allow her child to “meander” into my house! Read the details.
