Do you ever have blind taste tests at home?

“Great Question” (1points)

We don’t do it often enough, but me, my wife, and kids all like to taste-test common supermarket products to make sure we really like what we think we like. Sometimes, the results surprise us.

This week we tasted 4 different salsas (no – not real, fresh salsa) from the supermarket. The results were pretty consistent for all 5 of us, but we agreed that jarred salsa was really “salsa”.

We always make sure that the person tasting is closing their eyes.

If you taste test at home, what is the last food that you did?

We often blind taste test to see if a cheaper product tastes as good as more expensive. The answer is nearly always yes. One exception is Boxed Mac and Cheese. They only like Kraft.

I find that to be true too. The only area I see any kind of difference is in canned veggies. The name brand actually do taste better than the generic, IMO.

We have a game that my nephew invented that we play at the end of the Passover seder. Contestants are blindfolded and given candy fruit slices and have to guess the flavors. The one who gets the most correct wins. It is surprisingly hard to distinguish among them.

I think I’m going to start doing that with the kids!

Not since the kids left.

Have you ever tried telling the difference between salt and sugar? I heard it’s trickier than you’d think.

We do this all the time. :)

I think the last one we did was Fruit Loops. To try to correctly identify the colors.

@raum You need to come to our seder

I am doing a coffee taste off right now but it won’t be blind as I never drink anything hot with my eyes closed.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Why not? Looking at it isn’t going to tell you how hot it is. Getting your lips close to it will.

A blind test doesn’t have to be done with your eyes closed. Have one person place two different things into two different cups so only they know which is which, and then you taste with your eyes wide open, not knowing which is which.

Well, I’ve poked chef in the eye with a spatula when he overcooked the souffle.

@janbb Your nephew is going down!

What a lovely invite! I would love to, if I’m ever in the area.
