Yeah, it’s a great movie when you’re interested in film on a purely visual level, and perhaps a good one to show off that plasma screen with, but for entertainment value – yeah, I’d look somewhere else.
I’d also suggest nearly any movie by Ethan and Joel Coen. They tend to make great entertaining movies, as well as visually great ones. And just about any movie shot by cinematographer Roger Deakins (Deakins often works with the Coens, actually).
Deakins has shot three of my favorite movies, visually speaking: True Grit (the 2010 version), the Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford and No Country for Old Men. All three westerns (though No Country is sort of a “modern western”, being set in the early 1980s), but I love the western landscapes anyway, so…
For something that’s TV, rather than a standard movie. I’d recommend Breaking Bad. If you don’t mind the subject matter, that is (though given that you mentioned The Godfather I’m guessing that wouldn’t be a problem for you).
