If you have a fireplace, is it wood burning, or gas with fake logs?

It’s getting cold here. Last night I used the fireplace for the first time this season. It’s gas with fake logs.

Gas with fake logs as well. Two of them.

Two fireplaces? Or two logs

Coolhandluke's avatar

Two fireplaces. One upstairs and one down. The downstairs one is ventless. The one upstairs is inside an actual fireplace made into the home with a chimney.

Gas logs, I haven’t turned the pilot light on for the season.

@Tropical_Willie

Its not getting any warmer…

I have an electric space heater masquerading as a fireplace in the living room.

I have a Vermont Castings Resolute Acclaim wood stove, it’s the best of all the wood stoves I’ve ever lived with (six in total).

@canidmajor

Can you also cook on it? A pot of chili while you warm your buns?

canidmajor's avatar

Yup! I live in an area that gets plagued by hurricanes and snowstorms, when we lose power I can cook on the woodstove if I need to.

No,I try to fire my kiln in winter as it goes to 2232F. That heats the hell out of my house.
I’d want one purely for the way they look

@lucillelucillelucille

Is there such a thing as “cold firing” in the summer?

I have 2 wood burning stoves. The one in the basement is an air tight, Glacier Bay, single door single baffle. It will take a 12 diameter 3 ft long log. It is from the 80s when stoves were not so efficient. 40% or so.

The one upstairs is a high tech unit with a reburner by Lopi, the Freedom fireplace insert model. It runs really hot and burns the exhaust gasses a second time. It is clean and efficient, 72%. It has a glass window so you can see the flames. Very nice.
I use that one to dispose of paper products and cardboard along with wood from my property. I can easily heat my entire house with it when the power goes out.

I use the stove in the basement for large chunks of wood and stuff that won’t fit into the Lopi.

@josie- I suppose I could spray paint the pots.-Lol

canidmajor's avatar

@LuckyGuy I had a Lopi in a house I bought in the early 80s. It was a terrific stove, and would have been my second choice if I hadn’t been able to get a Vermont Castings!

A looped video on a screen.
Sometimes just the audio running on an USB stick.

I have a gas heater downstairs and an electric heater that looks more real than an actual fireplace. My husband prefers it because he’s not fond of chopping wood. I pushed for 2 fireplaces when we built the house, but he wouldn’t go for it. I do enjoy the electric with flames. Turn off all the lights and you wouldn’t know if you didn’t look before the lights went out

ragingloli's avatar

With thunderstorm sounds mixed in.

SEKA's avatar

No, it doesn’t thunderstorm. If you listen close, you can hear the fain crackling sound of a wood burning fire

ucme's avatar

Electric with fake coal.
Our dog Buddy barks at the flames…he’s an idiot!

SEKA's avatar

^ Dogs tend to mimic their Master. LOL

ucme's avatar

Yeah well, nobody’s perfect!

tedibear's avatar

We have a Lopi fireplace insert in the basement. We use it for heat in the winter, though not every day.

SEKA's avatar

@ucme You’re damn close

I put a gas fire in the fireplace last year and just love it. The chimney would have needed a new costly liner to be used as a wood fireplace any more. With the gas fire, i can turn it on and off at will and love sitting in front of it and reading.

LuckyGuy's avatar

@tedibear Does your Lopi have reburner tubes near the top of the fire box or doe sit have a catalytic converter?
I love my reburner stove. Once that thing is up to temperature I feed it all kinds of stuff and it burns it all. And, incredibly, there is no smoke! Amazing!
Lots of free BTUs!
