What do you think about the rift in the Royal family?

“Great Question” (2points)

I know a lot of people in the US don’t care about whatever happens with the Royal family, but let’s face it, there are many people all over the world that are “into it.”

What do you think about Harry and Megan moving away and distancing themselves from the rest of the family?

From what I hear on the news, UK citizens are upset about their tax dollars paying for security detail (800k per year approximately), and housing for Megan and Harry if they’re not going to be living a more private life.

I don’t know why they had to announce it. Why not just distance themselves without the announcement? To me, it’s like on Facebook when someone leaves a group and makes an announcement and other people comment “buh bye” and stuff like that. Just leave and don’t mention it.

Maybe by announcing it they hope they can rely on the decency of the tabloids journaille to leave them the fog alone?

I hope they have set an example to all offspring of currently reigning royalty, to abondon the fairytale ship and choose a ‘normal’ existence.

zenvelo's avatar

Apparently they announced it ahead of something being leaked by the Daily Mail.

The Sussexes are realizing a deep inherent racism in the UK, especially in the press.

ragingloli's avatar

That whole nonsense for me is on the same level as some random person’s personal problems.

I feel like Harry was probably the most traumatized by his mother’s death. In getting married and seeing how horrible the press and people in general are treating his family, he probably feels that it’s up to him to protect his family. And this is the only way he can do it.
Maybe they announced it so there would be no questions, no lies, no speculations. If they bowed out, I can imagine the headlines saying “Harry and Meghan trying to work on marriage “ or other rubbish.
Harry is 6th in line to be king. No way would he ever get that title, so why not go live his life peacefully.
And they have said he wants to earn his own way, so I give them kudos for that.

I see it as “their business” and I wasn’t even shocked

elbanditoroso's avatar

Royalty is such an anachronism in 2020. Let it flop.

I agree with @chyna that Diana’s death would have scarred Harry.

My take: this is a smart decision for Harry and Meghan and we should all just leave them alone.

Demosthenes's avatar

I think Harry and Meghan can’t have it both ways. If they’re going to split with the royal family, then they have to give up the financial perks that being a part of the royal family entails.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

I wondered about security and the cost.
Their life will still be anything but “normal” and I imagine they’ll be followed around just as they were in the UK.

Darth_Algar's avatar

I don’t. Someone else’s personal family issues are none of my concern.

Patty_Melt's avatar

It’s a diversion, to help our President avoid impeachment coverage.

We have known for decades that Harry has no love of being a royal trinket, and would like to live a life detached from that kind of attention.

Patty_Melt's avatar

@Darth, are you following me?

Darth_Algar's avatar

@Patty_Melt

Yes, it’s a small forum with a relative handful of regularly active users and a few posts per-day. This results in said handful of users ending up in just about every thread. So clearly I’m following you around here. Especially on threads where I’ve posted before you did.

jca2's avatar

@Darth_Algar: They’re not my concern either, other than entertainment. However, if I lived in the UK and paid taxes that went to providing their security and home renovations and clothes and stuff, I might be mad.

Actually yes, I’ve always loved the two boys and we kind of grew up together, across oceans.

Frankly, I think Harry was never into it, and married Meghan (correct spelling) partly because she wasn’t born into it and had a fresh perspective. Yes, like his mom to a degree.

Listen, Harry is 6th in line for the throne, let him do his thing. Second and third sons are always disposable per all my books, so why shouldn’t he be happy. I don’t think Meghan is into it at all, either, she likes the US and her career. A home in Canada will be good for them, they can spread their wings a bit and make their own life that is not prescribed by formalities.

By the Queen’s response, she didn’t seem too happy about it. Yikes.

canidmajor's avatar

I don’t see it like a Facebook group at all. The press doesn’t go berserk with speculation when someone leaves a Facebook group, whether announced or not.
I’m sure this was a matter of a LOT of discussion by the couple before the wedding, I figure they have probably waited. As for the money, they can separate themselves from taxpayer £, there is family money, separate from the taxpayers, and Meghan May have a fair whack put away herself. The earning potential is also high, books, speaking engagements etc.

Patty_Melt's avatar

In regards to making an announcement, I think they were forced into it. They have been scrutinized over being absent or stand offish for things already.
The public seems to need explanation through family channels to accept the decision.

ucme's avatar

Ginger & Yankee will never give up their royal titles, this would mean they would have to bow to Bill & Kate…that’s how pathetic these plastic, entitled fuckers are, the whole bally lot of them need to vanish without fuss.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@ucme Really makes you wonder how much better things could be if the money spent on them were all to go back in the coffer’s for the people.

ucme's avatar

@KNOWITALL This is precisely the point, they get to keep approx. £300k a year for security & lots more freebies out of the taxpayers pockets.
Financially independent, my arse!

canidmajor's avatar

Whether or not they do become financially independent is up in the air. The point is, they can. Markle, being an American grown up, who has already had a successful career, will probably dramatically alter the expected dynamic.

JLeslie's avatar

Maybe they announced it, because eventually they would have been asked about spending a lot of time out of the country. I agree with you though, I would not have announced it, not yet anyway.

I heard they are going to live in North America. Then I heard they are going to live in Canada. Does anyone know what part of Canada?

I don’t know if there is a rift, or if simply they want away from the UK tabloids and Harry had the experience of his parents own marriage crushed under the pressure, then his mum died in a paparazzi car chase. Prince Andrew also couldn’t sustain his marriage. Maybe Harry and Meghan thought they would try something different for now.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Maybe they will refuse to be supported by the common people’s taxes. ?

jca2's avatar

i guess we’ll find out after their meeting today (1/13/2020).

elbanditoroso's avatar

Mehgan can go back to acting, to make a salary.

What can Harry do? He was a helicopter pilot, right?

jca2's avatar

@elbanditoroso: They can make money licensing merchandise and lifestyle branding, like Goop or Oprah and stuff.

Dutchess_III's avatar

This is interesting. It contrasts 20 headlines comparing Meghan to Kate. It’s pretty rough.

Patty_Melt's avatar

That’s right, @elbanditoroso, I with his flight experience, he could work water drops on raging fires.

SEKA's avatar

It’s been announced that Meghan has signed a contract to do some voice over work for Disney in exchange for donations to Elephant Without Borders. The Queen says they will be splitting their time between Canada and the UK until a compromise can be worked out. If Meghan can get back into the entertainment field, they shouldn’t need any money from the royals to cover their expenses

KNOWITALL's avatar

Plus appearances and if they come out to partayyy, they could surprise us. She has cosmetics too.

jca2's avatar

Today on the news they said that Harry and Meghan were scheduled to do over 200 public events in the UK in 2020. Stuff like ribbon cuttings for hospitals and things like that. Not much fun for a young couple but you’d think Meghan was aware of what the “job” entailed when she got into it.

Also, they showed a photo of the Queen, Charles, William and William’s oldest son, which was the heirs to the throne. They said Harry felt cut out and so he is reacting accordingly.

canidmajor's avatar

I’m pretty sure that what is “reported” is wildly slanted. The link that @Dutchess_III posted is pretty telling.

chyna's avatar

I agree, @dutchess_III article shows there is out right bullying going on.

JLeslie's avatar

@jca2 Are all those things still in the schedule? Or, are they cancelling all of it, and moving?

jca2's avatar

@JLeslie: Maybe the others have to do them, I don’t know. The events would still take place. Maybe the events will take place without one of the royals attending.

canidmajor's avatar

@raum, you win the thread. :-)

jca2's avatar

haha on the radio, they were calling her “Yoko Ono” because they said people used to say Yoko Ono broke up the Beatles. Meghan broke up the royal family like Yoko broke up the Beatles.

Dutchess_III's avatar

LOLL. “At press time, Buckingham Palace had released a terse statement denying that the Windsor family ever contained a member named Harry.”

Patty_Melt's avatar

Whaaaaaaaa…....?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Raum’s link. It’s the very last line in that satire piece.

Patty_Melt's avatar

This breaks down several of the questions.

ucme's avatar

More Wallis Simpson than Yoko methinks…
