Why do so many drivers stop when they see a Green Arrow light, before making their turn?

Here’s a photo of the signal i’m talking about: https://www.flickr.com/photos/triborough/7036141821

Why do so many people who are turning right in such a situation…. stop first?!? They treat it as a stop sign. They “think” they’re being “cautious”. But they’re some of the most dangerous, stupid drivers there are. Because there’s no practical reason to stop. And no legal reason to stop. And no safety reason to stop.
So why do people stop?
What are they thinking?
Are they scared?
Do they think they’re “supposed” to stop?
How can people be that stupid?

Because some idiot might speed through and hit them.

Maybe they aren’t taking in the arrow right away, and they see the red light first? Or, possibly they don’t understand the law.

Do you live in a place with a lot of tourists? Possibly, a lot of states or other countries don’t have that set up where all four lights are in one vertical line. Sometimes we take for granted traffic signals, but they vary quite a bit around the country. For instance where I live now some left turn signals turn into a flashing arrow, rather than flipping to the round green for all lanes, to continue to be able to make a left after yielding the right of way to oncoming traffic.

@Inspired_2write , with your logic, people should stop at all green lights, then. What’s the difference?

You might be over-thinking this issue.

@josie , how so?
Clearly, the overthinkers are the ones who stop for no reason except for irrational fear, or ignorance of the law. (Or then again, maybe there’s no thoughts in their empty minds at all)
