Overall Winner: PlayStation 4
While both consoles certainly offer a lot, we have to give an edge to Sony’s PlayStation 4. The Xbox One is better for non-gaming applications and content, but if that’s what you care most about, you can get those features in a Roku, Apple TV, or any number of other dedicated devices that will stream content for a fraction of the price. If you’re buying a PS4 or Xbox One, you want to play games, and in this case, Sony has built a better dedicated gaming machine.

PS4:
Sony has shown stronger support for independent developers so far, and both the current and future game lineups look better for PS4 than for Xbox One. Most AAA games these days are released for both consoles, but the PS4’s list of exclusives easily trumps the Xbox’s.

Playstation is more of a gaming console. Microsoft have turned the Xbox into more of a media platform. It has a lot of apps that a million other devices have. To be fair, so does Playstation, but Sony still puts the focus on gaming. And Playstation has a ton of great exclusive titles (the Uncharted, God of War and the Last of Us series’ especially come to mind). While there’s not really anything available for the Xbox that isn’t available on other platforms. Even their “exclusives” are available on PC as well. If you own a decent PC then having an Xbox seems kinda superfluous at this point.

Eh, not really. I remember paying $50–60 a game back in the Atari 2600 days. And back then games almost never dropped in price. Nowadays a game might cost $60 at launch, but wait a few months and it’s down to $40. Wait a bit longer and it’s $20 or less. That’s like the price of a lunch for 2 at an average greasy spoon diner these days. Gaming is, on the whole, a fairly inexpensive hobby.
