Its an indication that the apparently empty space between bits of matter in the universe is actually something and not nothing.

Empedocles theorized that all change and motion are brought about by two fundamental forces: “love” (the force that brings things together) and “strife” (the force that pushes things apart).

The names are somewhat metaphorical, but not entirely.

Nah…if it were the cure for lonliness then extremely obese people would be the most popular.
