My maternal grandmother was Czech and I have a feeling, from some of her phrases, that where she grew up there were some Yiddish speaking people. One of the things she used to say was “What do you think my name is Fink, and I press pants for nothing?” Meaning, of course, it’s not a one way street as far as favors are concerned.
If someone reacted to something hot in the kitchen, there’d always be “you’d be hot too if you were sitting on the stove!” and when we’d leave for vacation I’d hear “we’re off like a herd of turtles!” Both of these were things my grandmother would say when my mom was a kid.
