I am most strongly drawn to European art, especially 19th century paintings and Dutch masters; but it really depends on the museum. I’ve spent a lot of time among Greek, Egyptian, and Asian sculptures, artifacts such as carved jade and gold jewelry, and Chinese and Japanese paintings.
If it’s a museum that I visit repeatedly, I zero in on my favorite pieces, and I like to take some things in a certain order. It bothers me when something I’m used to seeing has been moved or withdrawn, even though I know there are good reasons for doing that. I hated that the Boston MFA moved the massive statue of King Menkaura from its place at the top right of the main staircase to some unknown location. I couldn’t find it the last time I was there. It had been my first stop since I was a teenager. Now, I’m sorry to say, it’s years between visits.
