My assumption is that it comes from astrology, but I was hoping to find something more factual than just guessing. I can’t seem to find much on the wiki about the matter. The practice of pointed hats in general has had a long history that mingles with different rituals and meanings, but I’m specifically curious about why a “classic” depiction of a wizard’s hat has stars and moons on it. I thought I read somewhere a long time ago that it had something to do with the ancient religion of Zoroastrianism, but I can’t remember where I read that.
