Makes me wonder if they’ve closed down the maternity wards.

I’m guessing a lot of couples are holding off with the pandemic. Also if someone is pregnant they are more likely to stay close to home to be as safe as possible.

Figure that there’s a lot of sex that goes in Winter, around and after Christmas, so a lot of births that will cluster in the September / October / November time frame.

Then figure that many (most) people are stuck at home, and if you’re pregnant, you’re going to try and avoid COVID anyway. So you’re more likely to stay home if you’re with child.

My guess is that pregnant women are staying inside to avoid infection.

It is good that there are few pregnant women. But there is one on my street.

Maybe you just can’t tell.

My daughter in law is 6½ months along, and she is staying home. Something about a pandemic…

Trying to stay away from covid. Pregnant women aren’t risking their health while pregnant.

Some couples are waiting to get pregnant because of covid.

Also, schools were closed since March so it wouldn’t surprise me if there are fewer accidental pregnancies among teens and young adults.

@Aster: Are you out and about and doing all the same stuff you did before the pandemic? You know, all those places where people congregate, shops and restaurants and malls and stuff? If you are, and are not seeing many pregnant women, they are avoiding such things, and being smarter than you.
If you are not doing all those things, then you wouldn’t be seeing many people, pregnant or not.

Harder to tell nowadays as so many people in the USA are obese.

elbanditoroso's avatar

@gondwanalon true, but you still don’t see any pregnant men when you’re out and about

@gondwanalon Obese women don’t carry their weight the way a pregnant woman does. I suppose if they are both obese AND pregnant it would be harder.

They are still around. Just keeping safe. In my husbands family we had 5 pregnacies from October to July. Those born after March stayed home pretty much, before then they didn’t have much of a bump yet.
