Can you hear church bells where you live?

One of the churches around town tells the time with dongs of a bell. For some reason I only remember hearing it in the winter. It’s really cool, with the cold, still air and those dongs floating down. It’s cozy and comforting. Do you have anything comparable where you live?

Yes, but I think they only do it at noon. I love it!

Ours do it on the hour until about 10 pm I think.

I live right across from a church so yes. Sometimes they are for service. Most times its dumb kids.

I’m pretty sure the ones I hear are mechanized. I can’t imagine a human running to the church at the top of every hour to yank on some bells.

Sure. Every night at seven they ring for several minutes, and more often on the weekend. I find it very soothing, too. Especially when I think about how long those bells have been ringing, and how different the world was then. One of the churches close by was established in the 12th century, with its bells ringing since 1501. That’s just cool, even if you don’t believe in God.

The house I grew up in had a church nearby that didn’t have actual bells. It would play a recording of church bells throughout the day. The speaker sounded distorted and blown out to make matters worse. Noise pollution.

No, just trains every morning and the Saturday tornado warning alarm at noon.

Our tornado sirens go off on Tuesdays at noon. It always makes me jump a little until I remember what day it is.

There are no churches in the immediate vicinity of my house. There’s a lake and horse farms, and some golf courses.

Nope. The nearest church around me is about 2 miles away and doesn’t have church bells and the one that does is about 4 miles away. It’s a shame. I do miss hearing church bells ring. Especially in the winter. I do hear the train that runs behind my home in the winter though a lot clearer but that’s at 3 am. Not so comforting at that hour.

Back in my small hometown the church bells play on the hour, and someone plays hymns also on Sunday afternoons. It is so quiet and peaceful there you can hear them for miles around. It is wonderful there. Can’t wait to leave the rat-race and retire back there.
