Why did Trump do better with black and Latino voters?

“Great Question” (1points)

Election results show that while Biden has still won with communities of color, Trump has won a greater percentage of black and Latino votes than he did in 2016. In Nevada, issues like abortion (many Latinos are Catholic) were cited as driving conservative minority votes. Have Democrats failed to treat minority voters as individuals? Have they failed to address issues they really care about?

Because he took them for granted and didn’t offer them anything, like the Dems always do.

To be clear, “better” is not “well”. From what I’ve seen Black vote for Biden will be 85%. The change is attributed mostly to men, and when the question is raised people usually say there is a strong socially conservative vein in the community. Think Baptists.

As to the Latino vote, much of the increase is in South Florida among Cubans and Venezuelans, who are sympathetic to the “Democrats = Socialism!” line.

^ White Cubans who had their plantations confiscated and are still pissed off are always leaning right. The loss of latinx support is something else altogether.

The Latino expert said it was mostly religious values.

Also, @Call_Me_Jay: “he change is attributed mostly to men”

Trump gained latinx support equally (men & women).

Interesting article on this phenomenon.

“Too often, scholars try to test whether something is racist by looking exclusively at whether the rhetoric or proposals they disagree with resonate with whites. They frequently don’t even bother to test whether they might appeal to minorities, as well.”

“It turned out that the messages resonated just as strongly with Blacks as they did with whites. Hispanics responded even more warmly to the rhetoric about crime and immigration than other racial groups.”

As the article points out, “Trump is racist” is a message that is most effective with white voters. Liberals think all Latinos care about is illegal immigration but that’s not the case. Many legal immigrants are strongly against illegal immigration and their opinions on it aren’t too different from conventional Trump supporters.

@Demosthenes That’s what many legal immigrants have told me repeatedly, and I’ve mentioned it here several times.
