Sweden has been long hailed as the model for asylum seekers and refugees. See

However, its policies have changed over the years. The current governing law is “The 2016 Temporary Asylum and Family Reunification Law”. That law provides four types of refugees: Convention refugees, Subsidiary Protection Status, “Temporary Residence Permits, and Particularly Distressing Circumstances.

“A condition for permanent residence under the new law is demonstrated economic self-sufficiency. The law also places a requirement of economic self-sufficiency on petitioners for family reunification.”

Time limits on the first two categories are 3 years and 13 months. Both are renewable.

My question is: “How different is the US policy from Swedish law?”
