I figure it’s multifaceted.
A lot of the time it’s older people who are attacked and I bet some of it is probably gang initiation. Asian attacks are overlooked just like when Blacks or Latin Americans are attacked. Many older Asians suffered horrific circumstances in their youth and were taught they have no voice and to be glad they are alive, keep their heads down. The Vietnamese, Chinese, Koreans, grew up in war or with a solid knowledge of the racism that existed in America historically and often experienced some themselves.
Add in the pandemic and Trump making China a target to blame and we have idiots in our country who think Asian-Americans are somehow less American or not American.
I wrote on another Q that several months ago someone wrote on a restaurant review group that he won’t eat in Chinese restaurants now, he doesn’t want to give them money. After that Q I bought Chinese take-out that weekend.
