What words have been used that put either you or someone you know in Facebook jail?

“Great Question” (1points)

A friend of mine recently wrote how he hated British accents. That put him in jail.

I called a Proud Boy a misogynist pig after he threatened me. That put me in jail.

The reason Facebook gave both my friend and I was hate speech and bullying.

Do you have any examples? What words trigger the algorithm?

No, I don’t have any example for you, because I have never been in that situation before. Why? Because I don’t go out of my way to personally attack anyone, even when that person is clearly in the wrong and is aggressive. If someone harasses me, I stop talking to them, and either ignore them or report them. And I also don’t post about how I hate some mundane thing that most likely doesn’t affect my life negatively.

I hardly ever post on Facebook and never to call out anyone, or call anyone names. If I don’t like what they are saying, I block them. So I’ve never been in Facebook jail, nor do I know anyone that has been.

I had a friend that ended up in Facebook jail, probably because she was prone to quick-temper, poorly-thought-out responses. She had a tendency to just spew vitriol without understanding that there might be consequences, even on the internet.

I have not, personally, been to Facebook jail, I seem to be restrained and articulate enough to avoid it.

No, I put Facebook in my personal jail instead, because it promoted violence against me and my family. This went on for two years! There are no words to describe the low opinion I have of the people who are Facebook and those who promote it.

I once get Facebook to delete the account of a convicted, registered sex offender. I reported him (https://www.facebook.com/help/210081519032737/), and he was removed immediately.

Someone I went to HS with was just in FB jail for a month. I asked him what got him put in there and he said he used the term “wetbacks.” I don’t know how he used it (directed at someone or not).

I hardly use Facebook anymore but my outspoken left-wing friend has been put in Facebook jail multiple times for her aggressive political posts and arguments.

Is it the specific words, or is it that someone flagged a post?

I’ve called people stupid trolls, idiots, fools, liars and terrible people on Facebook, without getting any FB attention. I don’t think I’ve ever been punished by Facebook.

my friend was put in facebook jail for using the term Nazi. though her post was about her audition for the musical “The Producers”.

If I had to guess, @Zaku, it’s both words and flags.

@anniereborn That’s funny!

katiesunrise's avatar

@anniereborn Thank you for sharing! This is the type of response I was hoping for. People get put in jail for the silliest of things.

Some of you assume the people I know who have been put in jail are angry individuals spouting hate. That’s not the case. Lighten up, Francis. ;)

katiesunrise's avatar

@Zaku true hateful rhetoric gets flagged and Facebook does nothing about it. It’s certain words that trigger the algorithm. My friend was having an innocent playful discussion with someone when he said he hated British accents. Facebook told him it was hate speech.

You need to be more specific about the answers you want, or we’ll miss it, every time.
You asked if we knew why people had been put in Facebook jail, we told you.
Sorry it wasn’t what you wanted.

@katiesunrise I doo not set myself up by even using facebook!

@katiesunrise I agree with @canidmajor that we need more context here. Because none of us here even gets to see the full posts you mentioned, we are forced to base our answer on your description.

But assuming what we see is what we get…

Ok, I’ll probably give you the British accent one, given that it may be a joke taken out of context, but is there any justification in calling someone a misogynistic pig? Just because someone is harassing you doesn’t mean you have to sink to their level and insult them. As I said before, I don’t attack back, I just block them and report them. Insulting someone doesn’t only make you look bad, but also gives whoever you’re insulting ammunition to prove you’re bad even when you clearly aren’t. I suspect this is how you got sent to jail.

And the way you say “Lighten up, Francis” seems to me like you already made up your mind that FB is totally in the wrong and you have nothing to do with it, and whoever saying otherwise is just being as unreasonable as FB. Do you think it’s time to do a bit reflection on yourself and try to see the situation more objectively?

I agree there are occasions when FB is unfair, but there are also occasions when it isn’t the case.

Zaku's avatar

@katiesunrise Wow… that’s pretty broken for FB to do that.

jca2's avatar

A friend of mine just posted that she has been in FB jail for using the term “white trash.”

I refuse to answer on the grounds that, if I list the words that would put me in Facebook jail, they would also put me in Fluther jail, and thus, I would incriminate myself.

There was a post that said Emilia Clarke (Dany on Game Of Thrones) was unhappy with how the show ended. My comment was something like “I am available for regret sex”. Skynet didn’t like that remark, and told me they do not approve of my putting pressure on someone for sex. Like The Mother Of Dragons is going to submit to finding comfort with me.
Anyway, my account has been suspended for 24 hours.
