How many xrays and CTs have you had?

“Great Question” (3points)

I realize you might not remember them all, but to your best estimation. What part of your body was zapped and approximately what year? You don’t have to break it down, you can just give a total number. Do you worry a lot how much radiation you are getting from xrays?

As a child in the early 70’s I remember at least two chest X-rays.

In my 20’s (circa 1995) I had about ten xrays of my lower back on what I feel was an old machine.

In my early 30’s (1999) an X-ray that was filming for more than a few seconds to guide a surgical procedure.

Head CT (2001)

CT neck to hips, some areas twice for contrast (2012)

5 xrays neck and shoulder, a couple knee xrays, a couple of others I don’t know exactly where. (2012).

Mammogram 4 times from 2,008 to 2020. The last two were 3D

Chest X-ray 2020.

Typical dental X-rays about every two years. Let’s say 25 over my lifetime.

3 full mouth panoramic dental X-rays.

I’ve only been through an airport security scan twice.

I’m 53.

10 or 12 CT scans neck to lower pelvis

Chest X-rays 20 or 30 (ex smoker)

6 panoramic dental X-rays

4 head X-rays for car accident (different perspectives) broke the windshield with head

30 sets of dental bite wings

Two ankle sets both ankles

3 or four for broken bones in hands

Two each of shoulders

Fluoroscope for fitting of shoes 6 or 8.

I should probably glow in the dark

Other than a childhood brain surgery, I’ve only had dental x-rays (every 3–5 years I believe), excepting a elbow and wrist break, and of course my mammograms.

I can’t break it down like you have, but my best guess is 30 various x-rays, including dental, 15 CT scans, 10 MRIs, 5 mammograms, 10 airport security scans. I don’t really even think about the radiation. I’m 64.

I had at least one X-Ray of my feet as a child at a shoe shop when getting measured for new shoes. Other than that, I’ve probably had as many as 40 dental X-Rays. I have never been very happy getting these X-Rays. I’m told the X-Ray dose is tiny but the technician always leaves the room when the picture is taken and I have to wear a lead bib.

Various dental Xrays, mammograms and a chest Xray or two. I could not list the years. All between 1982 and 2021. I am 52

I’ve had two contrast barium xrays under the age of 15 and one contrast tracing with RI contrast in my 20’s. The usual dental xrays. One MRI on a knee in my 40’s. Two ultrasounds in my 30’s (if we’re counting those).

About 10–12 X-rays on neck, shoulder, knees.
1–2 CT Scans on my back.
6–8 MRIs on my neck and shoulder.

Dental X-rays every two years since childhood. Mammograms every two years since I was fifty (I“m 63) and three ultrasounds.

@lastexit What country are you in?

lastexit's avatar

@JLeslie United States

^^I only asked because in the US usually the dentists tried to get X-rays every year (which I refused to do) and I thought the recommendation is mammogram every year after 50 (which I haven’t done either).

~ 5 years old: x-ray for a possible broken arm (1967–8) tricycle overturn
~55 years old: Catscan for possible minor stroke.

There may have been more.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@JLeslie Insurance now only pays every 3 years for dental, last I heard.

I forgot about dental X-rays. Those are not counted above. Probably once every 5–7 years.

@JLeslie Like you, I don’t always follow the rules.

^^ I should have said recommendations.

Dozens of x-rays and one. No CT scans. 2 MRI’s (magnetic resonance imaging) to make 3-D images of my heart.

@KNOWITALL Interesting! So that means it was unnecessary all along to do them every year. I can’t tell you how many hygienists and dentists gave me a hard time, and it is difficult to stand up for yourself against a doctor. They always know better of course.~

Remember when there was a big brouhaha about not doing mammograms so often? I guess every year has stayed intact though. I thought it was beginning at age 40, but now is it age 50? The change must have happened while I was busy refusing to do mammograms in my late 40’s, and now I am in my 50’s anyway. I always said I didn’t know anyone under 50 who had breast cancer that had the cancer detected on mammography. If they felt a lump or something wrong they all had to get ultrasounds or MRI’s.

They will radiate us without thought is my opinion.

I just went for a arterial calcium score CT. I had mixed feelings about doing it, even though I was the one who asked about getting it done.
