Probably an aggrieved parent in a supermarket! I can’t imagine that it is ascribable to one original speaker.

Some virgin, about 1200 years ago.

I’m imagining someone in one of those extremely terrible “how to be a good parent” treatises from Puritan America or Britain circa 1600.

It rings a faint bell as a line in some movie from years ago. But I guess the scene wasn’t that memorable. I don’t think it’s especially original or unique. I mean, it might have been in a 20th-century movie, but I doubt that was the first time those words were ever put together.

And people who say it aren’t quoting it. They’re just saying it.

Marie Antoinette

It was a line in the Chevy Chase comedy “Caddyshack”: youtube

@elbanditoroso I didn’t see that one, so that’s another instance. My vague recollection has it more like coming from a domineering parent or other authority figure. Not surprised if it’s shown up more than once.

I’m pretty sure it was my dad.

Bogart said in some movie (perhaps “the Maltese Falcon) “you’ll take it and like it”. I think it was while he was roughing up the gunsel.

I looked it up and it’s “when you’re slapped, you’ll take it and like it”.

Well, “you’ll take it and like it” doesn’t seem to be the same as “you’ll get nothing and like it”.
