How many of you can pass this simple test?

“Great Question” (0points)

If |0| = 0, |-1| = 1, |1| = 1, and |2| = 2, then |-2| = ???
I’m curious how many of you already recognize this and how many can figure it out. It’s the easiest thing on the planet to me but 9/10 people I ask fail to figure it out. I’m trying to understand why.

I can.

I can. Absolute values take no account of the negative sign.

Insultingly easy.

It isn’t really a test it’s just a mathematical notation we learned at school for absolute values.

People: Well I can do it so any one who can’t is stupid.
There was a time you couldn’t do it either.

@elbanditoroso And the answer is? :D

Hey! No one told me there would be a test!

@SpookyHeather I didn’t want to give it away for the others.

But the answer is that same as the equation 400 divided by 200.

I thought there was a test?

That’s just asking “do you understand the concept of absolute value?”

I recognize it, but I was always good at math, and continue to use it in programming, but there it has a different notation.

@SpookyHeather I happen to be a reader of details, but a lot of us aren’t. It seems like you’re looking for an answer to a different question than the one in your title.

Anyway, the use of a specific system of notation is not a matter of intelligence if you were never exposed to it before. Would a person be dumb if they couldn’t read the Greek alphabet or the notes on a musical staff?

Besides, none of us know “how many of you” anything. We’re single individual users and not a mass with a group mind. I’m just as singular as you are. And so is everyone else.

”... people I ask fail to figure it out”
@SpookyHeather Could you describe for us how you are ‘asking’ that set of mathematical statements? thanks!

Nope. I have never seen that notation before and I have no idea what it means.
