Do avocados have a little green mind of their own?

And is it mischievous? I bought avocados for guac about 4 weeks ago. I have to buy them hard so I bought them about 4–5 days in advance. When I went to make the guac they were brown and rotten inside.

Last week, I bought avocados on Thursday for guac today and they are still hard. What gives?
