Psychotropic Medication affects mood and brain function, right?

What’s “anti psychiatric help”? What would it look like?

Mimishu1995's avatar

@snowberry sounds like the 18th century treatment of mentally ill patients to me…

Is that what you mean, OP?

janbb's avatar

I don’t understand the question. Meds are a big part of what psychiatry is about.

Are you asking about advocacy for patients who wish to refuse some or all medications?

If so, I’m thinking an attorney would be the first step.

Scientologists

Psychiatrists treat mental illness and brain damages with pills wheras Psychologists treat mental healh issues through talking issues out with the patient.

As for Anti-Psychiartry…just means no treatments with pills or electric shock .
I agree pills and eclectric shock theraphy is barbaric and outdated.
Dr Amen who is a Psychiartrist has revoluntionized this industry by scanning the brain and showing the effects of drugs and therefore pinpoints the correct treatment ( usually a better diet ).

Thanks for that @Inspired_2write

amenclinics also cost BIG bucks; they require a deposit of $500—$1500 to secure an appointment. I could go on, but if anyone is interested just go to https://www.amenclinics.com/affordable-payment-options/.

They also, of course, offer supplements at brainmd.com owned by Dr. Amen.

I’m not saying it’s pseudo-science. His system may be wonderful and accurate, and I’m sure it has all of the latest bells and whistles. But I’m highly suspicious.

@Inspired_2write I agree pills and eclectric shock theraphy is barbaric and outdated.

I’ve been on, and am currently on medication, and I had a series of 17 electroshocks 4 years ago. I’ll trust that over Dr. Amen’s brain scans and supplements any day. And the anti-psychiatry movement is much more than simply “just means no treatments with pills or electric shock”, as you claim.

Meanwhile, the OP has never returned to clarify their question.

janbb's avatar

@smudges GA. I know many people who have been helped by ECT and meds, as well as talk therapy with psychologists. “A better diet” is usually not the solution for their problems.

Inspired_2write's avatar

@janbb
Better diet was only one aspect of his treatments which are more compassionate treatments.

Dr Phil lost his license to practice medicine !

smudges's avatar

OMG well if Dr. Phil says it, it must be true! That tells me pretty much all I need to know about Dr. Amen, as well as where your ‘facts’ come from.

Inspired_2write's avatar

@smudges
Just because he was on Dr Phil doesn’t diminish Dr Amen and his credentials.
He has a book written about his groundbreaking work.

Daniel G. Amen, MD, is a double board-certified psychiatrist, teacher, and nine-time New York Times best-selling author.

Amen is the founder and medical director of Amen Clinics in Newport Beach and San Francisco, CA, Bellevue, WA, Reston, VA, Atlanta and New York City.

It was Dr Amen that I was referring to , just because he was interviewed on Dr Phil doesn’t discredit him .

Patty_Melt's avatar

I’m still waiting for clarification from OP.

snowberry's avatar

Aaand it looks like the OP has not returned since the day they created their account on August 28.

smudges's avatar

Again, I’m not saying it’s pseudo-science. His system may be wonderful and accurate, and I’m sure it has all of the latest bells and whistles. But I’m highly suspicious.

And this discussion has gotten waaaay off track regarding the original question, which the OP doesn’t even care enough to check back to read answers.

I’m out.

I can’t talk about Anglo-American psychiatry but I know there are the same problems as in Germany. And the main issue is the unscientific way to diagnose psychiatric disorders. The Psychiatrists have statistics and experiences with symptoms but no real criteria of natural sciences. To explore the patient today means to ask him and he answers what the doctor wants to hear or he tells the doctor his fairy tales and simulates. And then the content of the question above: the private or political abuse of psychiatry. In our free world, nobody suspects such abuse but it’s a fact. In Germany was a man explained crazy and he sat six years in a psychiatric jailhouse, unguilty and without psychic problems…

smudges's avatar

If you’re talking about psychiatrists and psychologists in general, and not this particular Dr. Amen, then you’re way off base and know next to nothing about mental health.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

The OP has not returned since asking the Q.

smudges's avatar

I know…that’s been mentioned several times. I was responding to @bernd in my last post.

@smudges

I believe, Dr. Amen could be on the right path, because every so-called psychic disorder has a physical root cause. What is psychic? It is the stream of consciousness that circulates between the brain cortex and the auditive organs of perception in the VIII. brain nerve, an informational phenomenon in different forms of energy, but ever acoustic embossed.
