Is "coming together as a nation" necessarily a good thing?

“Great Question” (1points)

There’s always a lot of praise for the prospect of unity and bipartisanship but around 9/11 I’m always rememinded of the AUMF, the invasion of Iraq, the Patriot Act, and other things that were accomplished when the government and the people “came together” that are now not seen as such great things. How can we avoid going in the wrong direction when we unite?

Did not work out that well for a lot of people, in ‘39.

@Demosthenes. Exactly.
Unite, but be on the right side. Otherwise, you find yourself being okay with torturing you enemies.

Absolutely not.

I didn’t see a lot of the “coming together” that you mention. I saw hate crimes against anyone with brown skin and or clothing or cultural indications that they might be Muslim (including Sikhs and others) skyrocket. There was enormous outrage in the government’s response. There was a huge attempt at justification by many by comparing 9/11 to Pearl Harbor, that was just silly. Then the Iraq thing…
No, there was a lot of media hype and beat8ng of breast and pounding of drums, but no real “coming together” that I saw.

Team work is ALWAYS a good thing! Otherwise, we’re screwed.

Working together is important. Different than coming together I guess. It doesn’t mean everyone agrees, it just means an understanding that everyone cares about the success of our nation and is willing to have civil debate on what path we should take to continue to move forward.

The last 15 years Republicans have accused Democrats over and over again of not being patriots, not being American, or not honoring the flag, and all sorts of crazy talk to divide us. It’s to the point where wearing a flag is perceived as being part of QAnon, what am I going to do with all of my flag shirts and yoga pants? Pisses me off.
