Is this sexism or is it not?

Men are only allowed to attend the Zurich Film Festival closing party when accompanied by a woman. They say younger men often behave badly when they go out. Welcome to Switzerland!

Of course it is sexism. It’s also group punishment = all men being affected because of the bad behavior of a few.

The way to address it is to train the men to behave.

Well I wonder how they deal with homosexual couples

No. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Sometimes you have to wage absolute control of the many to assure control of the few renegades. In this instance, necessity warrants total control, so it isn’t sexism.

Not sure about sexism, but it may be overkill in terms of security measures.

Just depends on what the history of this festival party has been – and how nasty those Zurich bad boys really are.

Of course it’s sexism. You are treating one group of persons differently than another group based solely on their sex. Textbook definition.

It sounds like bigotry. Why would any place require a man to bring a woman as a date? What if a younger man brings a woman? How would that resolve the issue? Why does it have to be about who brings whom? Are there invitations involved? If so, are they only issued to men? What if a woman received an invitation and brought a young man, or for that matter, an older woman?

Is there some other purpose to this event than previewing a film? If so, then it needs to be labeled as something else.

@Pied_Pfeffer He said it’s for the after-party.

I did a search and after some difficulty, I managed to find three articles from two very obscure websites that look suspiciously familiar in appearance. And that’s all I can find.

Unless there are also a ton of articles in languages other than English, I’m pressing X for doubt

Mimishu1995's avatar

*similar, not familiar.

And also the specific keyword that I had to type to get my result is “Zurich Film Festival men and women”, which isn’t a recommended keyword. “Zurich Film Festival sexism” doesn’t work.

US resident here. Here’s something to ponder. in the US car insurance for young men is more expensive than car insurance for young women. it’s been that way for as long as I can remember.

The reason they give is that young men get in more accidents than young women of the same age.

Try to convince the insurance industry that this is sexism, and to lower their rates for young men.

@janbb point taken. The question still stands, no matter the event.

omtatsat's avatar

Who would want to go to this event anyhow?

Mimishu1995's avatar

Err… Movie lovers?

Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean no one likes it.

JLoon's avatar

@omtatsat – HA!

If those bad boys need a female escort to get past security I’d appreciate a free dinner – As long as it’s really expensive.

Mimishu1995's avatar

You are just throwing random hateful things around at this point.

I’m still waiting for a valid source of your claim. Until I see it, I stand by my point that this doesn’t happen.

JLoon's avatar

@Mimishu1995 – What hateful things?

Mimishu1995's avatar

@JLoon he went from criticizing sexism in the movie festival, then saying Zurich is a boring town that no one likes the moderated response, and now he is saying no one likes the film festival.

The OP also has a history of grudge against Switzerland. He posted a “question” basically ranting about Swiss police not allowing him to go inside a restaurant for not having vaccinated or something like that.

Coupled with the tone of this question’s details, and the fact that such a controversial incident took me so long to find information on, just makes me suspicious whether there is a reason for this question.

JLoon's avatar

@Mimishu1995 – Well you probably have more history with him than I do, and I don’t always take Switzerland seriously anyway.

But here. I think you were asking about some kind of proof:

@JLoon That’s the link in my answer up there. I explained why I don’t buy into it.

I don’t have any opinion about Switzerland. I’m not defending it. I’m just frustrated that the OP is spreading what could be blatant misinformation just to support his hatred.

@Mimishu1995 – Be my date. We can stream Netflix instead ;)

Mimishu1995's avatar

@JLoon Gladly. I have always been looking for a movie buddy :D

JLoon's avatar

@Mimishu1995 – Deal! I’ll try not to behave badly ;)
