I got a D in geometry when I was a sophomore. I was vastly more interested in Caroline sitting next to me than the coursework if I remember. Yeah my parents were unhappy but it was not the end of the world. I did better next time, I did go to college and graduate school for a math heavy stem major. Nobody ever asked about that D in geometry. As long as you don’t keep getting D’s then you don’t have much to worry about.

There are plenty of good colleges you could get into with a D.

But if you’re aiming for Ivy League, that could be an issue. Though what else do you have going on with extracurriculars, etc.? It’s not just grades.

I honestly don’t recall if semester grades count toward your GPA, or if it is only your final grades.
Having a D will turn 2 A’s into B’s.
Struggling now means you’ll be playing catch up moving forward. Math is one of those subjects that constantly builds on things you’ve already learned.

Grades have consequences but your circumstances determine how severe. A D in 2nd grade is not life altering. A D in law school is a significant setback for a high achiever. Earning a D in a class doesn’t make you a bad person or even a bad student. Smart people know what they don’t know and study and request special tutoring/help if possible. I believe that’s your group. Good luck

A “D” is not a failing grade.

Long ago, the college I attended had catch up classes for people who struggle with a particular basic subject.
It depends on what you want to major in. If you don’t need strong math skills for your chosen major, they won’t scrutinize math grades all that closely.

In high school, you can ask your teacher for an incomplete and information on how to bring the grade up. Most schools will provide a tutor if you ask for one.
California bas a “grade dismissal” plan to remove a bad grade, due to the Covid interference with schooling.

I flunked my geometry final (63%) and ended the class with a D. I still got into a good college. I did well in my other classes, and was aiming to be a foreign language major, so I doubt that my D was heavily weighted.

I think it’s going to depend on your desired college, and what major you think you will want to pursue.

I got F’s and D’s in math my whole life but A’s and B’s in everything else. You can talk with your school counselor about getting admitted into special math classes for students who struggle with math. And Yes, you can still go to college.
