I’m not a member of the Mormon church but I think that many members wish that the Book of Mormon was consistent with reality.

I’ve been to the Mormon church many times through out my life. Also had several meeting in my home and at the church with Mormon missionaries. My problem is not with the church or people associated with the church. My problem is with the Book of Mormon (BOM). Yes I’ve read the entire thing. Nearly all events described in the BOM are inconsistent with reality. No physical proof and or describes plants and animals that were not present in the Americans at the time or at any time. In other words they were made up out of thin air by Joseph Smith. I discussed then many problems of the BOM with Mormons and they have no explanation other that God wants me to have faith that it all happened.
Bizarre that millions of people around the world believe the events in the BOM really happened.
Yes I know that Mormons doesn’t want to be called Mormons anymore. Why? I think that they likely want to distance themselves from the BOM and all it’s problems.

Not familiar with it. I was raised between Irish Catholicism and Southern Baptist, both of which have their own issues, in my opinion. I have long since washed my hands of all organized religion.

Not a member, so my views are probably invalid.

As a outsider, there are three things that bother me:

- their enormous wealth (and how it is spent and allocated)

- their seeming exclusivity (no outsider can walk into their temples)

- their historical racism and sexism

And then there are smaller theological issues:

- post death ‘baptising’ of non-Mormons

I imagine that there are institutional rationalizations for all of these, but as an outsider, it makes me skeptical.

I grew up around Mormons, and most of them disliked the restrictions on Coca-Cola, smoking, and premarital sex.

I’ve heard it said that when Mormons die they get their own planet and all of their children, when they die, come to serve the parents on that planet. So there is that.

Don’t know how children can come to serve the parents on that planet when the children themselves are suppose to get their own planet…

Is it just me or does this sound crazier than shit?!

@Dutchess_III I would put it on the same level as Scientology and the pseudo-scientific basis for it, Dianetics.

Not as bad as Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple, or David Koresh and his whole Branch Davidian kooks that were loony in the name of their religion.

I’m sending this to the only jelly who I think is Mormon, or raised Mormon. I hope I remember correctly.

I’m not Mormon, but have some Mormon friends. They are lovely and have never made me feel uncomfortable, and I don’t have anything negative to say about them. There are some sects that are horrible and outrageous.

They are kind of clannish, but most very religious people are, and Mormons tend to be very religious.

I like that they don’t drink, don’t have caffeine, and don’t smoke. Some of them cheat, but that’s the overall expectation.
