Feb. 6, 1952: anyone else here remember it?

“Great Question” (3points)

I remember learning that King George had died and his young daughter Elizabeth was now queen. That was a major event in my family’s view of the world because my father was a Canadian citizen.

She’s now seventy years on the throne.

Of course an affirmative answer tells your age. I don’t bother to hide that I’m a senior. I was a preschooler at the time.

Anyone else have an actual memory of that date? You can always respond discreetly if you prefer.

No. It was a few years before I was born. I do remember JFK tho.

Yes, I do and remember Harry S. Truman.

I don’t but I remember the day of the coronation the following year when I walked out of our house and got lost. I was three years old.

I can remember it being the headline I ignored on my way to the comics. But I do recall rather vividly the subsequent televised broadcast in grainy black & white of what appeared to be a kid clad in the sort of finery granted bishops at high mass on holy days of obligation. Our parents thought the coronation a big enough deal that we kids were compelled to watch it to my annoyance and mounting suspicions regarding adult discernment.

I was awaiting my 2nd birthday with great anticipation. We had no TV because my Gramps believed that the TV was a curse from Satan himself. The radio was probably on but I had a way of not hearing it because it got on my nerves. We lived in a tiny town where the local newspaper covered which farmer’s cow had her calf the day before…or how many piglets farmer whoever’s sow had. IF it didn’t happen in our neighborhood, it didn’t concern us & IF it happened on the other side of the pond, it was their problem. I’m pretty sure that the convo around the dinner table was when we needed to butcher the next calf or Gramps beginning to plan when he will be planting his next garden & what the womenfolk thought he should plant. IF I did hear about it, it didn’t stick with me as being important to my life.

When I was four years old, she was already on the throne for twenty years…
And she might be another ten sitting on it.
Unbelievable.

By the way, did you hear that Camilla can be called Queen, when Charles gets to be king?
Was announced today.

Also, I think it’s pretty nice that you oldie guys and gals are around, and not weary to out your period of birth!

@rebbel, I read that announcement yesterday. Queen Consort. Big concession. But she knows that Charles (if he ever has a chance to become king) can make his own decision, and I’m sure she’d prefer to have it be in accord with hers.

Just like Queen Victoria’s Bertie, who reigned for less than ten years as Edward VII after he’d waited and prepared all his life to assume the throne, Charles is going to be a pretty old guy when he undertakes the king gig. I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be to be on standby for so many years. I’ve wondered if he will even manage to outlive her.

Very much so, @Jeruba.
In a way I already feel sorry for the lad as long as I can remember (concerning his role of king).
I foresee a spectacular happening once it’s his turn.
Something to the effect of stepping down after a month and let Harry’s brother take over immediately (who’s already around forty years old himself…, today).

No. That was just over 2 years before I was born.

No, before I was born. My earliest “news” memory if you want to use that term, was watching old film clips of WWII on the “Twentieth Century” TV show with my dad. JFK was the first POTUS I can really recall. Ike was still the Prez when I was in kindergarten but I never payed any attention to stuff like that. I was a slacker from an early age.

Not that specific date.

However, it was in early 1952 that I was lying on an Ottawa snowbank under a porch, when I began to wonder about how long I had been alive.

I thought, “Let’s see, I’m five years old, so I guess I’ve been alive for five years”.

Meanwhile, inside and about 8 feet above me, my parents were probably celebrating their 6th wedding anniversary.

No, that was before my parents had ever met
