Also, @Mimishu1995, Fluther was a very active site back then, as you probably know. We had people joining all the time. There must have been many new jellies in 2013. Including you!
As I recall, I lifted it sometime in the 70’s (probably before you were born).
I think the person who used it before me, is just kicking back in the TV Guide Writers’ Assisted Living Center. ;p
@Brian1946Are you referring to the opinions of people that you encountered, before you joined Fluther?
Yes, that’s it. I joined Fluther when I was still in high school. At that point I had had a lot of bad stuff thrown at my self-esteem and I believed that I was nothing. I was already involved in the Internet but no one was telling me that I was worth something, so I joined Fluther simply to ask questions without having someone saying I was stupid it didn’t help that I was called stupid and racist on Y!A so I was scared it would happen here too.
I’m not sure, exactly. I know that Mimi and I were neck and neck for a while on lurve, but she was here before me. I don’t think it was very long in between. I had over 7,000 lurve when I left. I came back several months later, maybe a year. I had closed my account, so I couldn’t be Jonesn4burgers anymore. When I heard a patty melt mentioned on TV, I thought that was the perfect resurrection name for me.
People recognized me as a reincarnation, but it hurt me when nobody remembered my original identity until I revealed it.
I remember my first question, because I was nervous about being accepted, and I wanted an ice breaker. I asked, so, who here is funny?
Mimi, you were not as active at first. I do remember you frequently calling your questions dumb, so I’m pretty sure I was here not long after you. I felt bad for you, that you felt so uncomfortable. TJBM helped you a lot with relaxing, and feeling at ease. I watched you gain confidence over these years, and you have become quite the tiger, when a situation calls for it.
@Brian1946 wow, I remember that thread! That was epic.
Something Dutchess said in her story inspired a new question for me. I will have it posted in a few minutes.
@jca2
No @KRD
I had a high school teacher who devoted all our classes to learning by writing our own stories and then showcased and presented a few in class everytime.
The students became even more proficient in writing good stories.
So we were Inspired to write..hence my Fluther name.
@Hawaii_Jake I was on it earlier than than when using the computer with my son. Annot remember the name that I used then.
However I moved in 2013 and started it again with the present name.
Many of us were on another social network called wis.dm. We were very fond of that place. It started dying. One member pointed all of us to Fluther.
In those days Fluther didn’t have the section. Everything was treated like they treat questions in General. NO LAUGHING DAMNIT!! We were a wild and rowdy bunch because there was virtually no moderation on wis.dm.
It took some adjusting.
I was an Askville refugee. I figured out how to contact Ibstubro by phone, and asked him if he knew where everyone else was going. He told me of Fluther. He cautioned me that it had a nautical theme, in that fluther is what a group of jellyfish are called. Being a Navy veteran, it sounded like I would fit right in. Lol.
@Patty_Melt I’m so glad you had someone to get you here. I stumbled on this site through sheer luck. If that forum thread hadn’t come up in the first result I’m not sure I would have known this site. I was depressed at that time too, having been treated horribly on Y!A.
I joined on a cold snowy day in early 2010 under a different name (blueiiznh) and then took several years off for a much needed sabbatical. I rejoined in 2019.
Oh the places you’ll go!
No. It’s long gone. It had SOME moderation but not much. Martin just expected us to act like grown ups all by ourselves.
He went on to better things I guess. The whole site glitched worse and worse and then sank.
I cried.
