My cellphone suddenly burst into flames, from the battery. Who should I file a complaint to about this? I think people need to be aware of this and someone should be held accountable!

Who’s the manufacturer? I would write to them and also go to the store where you bought it if you bought it in a store.

Also report it to a public agency that has no stake in protecting the manufacturer. I just Googled ‘consumer protection dangerous goods’ and found this one:

The CPSC.

So many questions here:
\
– what type of phone? manufacturer? Model?
– removable battery or installed battery?
– if removabble, was the battery an OEM (manufacturer) battery? or a Chinese fake?

- and then there is the charger – OEM charger or cheap imitation?
– does the charger have an overflow cutoff switch?

- what were you doing with the phone? near a fire or flame?
– was it in or near water?

Anyone you report this to is going to ask you the exact same questions.

People have known about this for years. I have seen the videos where the phones have exploded into flame. The manufacturers know about it. Owners of electric cars are leaning about it. Anything with a lithium battery is suspect.

It’s interesting that it is a Motorla phone – they are one of the last manufacturers that actually supports removable batteries. (just about every other phone maker solders the batteries in place).

That makes me suspicious about what battery was actually inside.

In any event, report it to Lenovo (they own Motorola). But don’t hold your breath.

You should contact the manufacturer of the phone immediately.

There may well be a design issue with this particular model and if there is then many of those who purchased this phone may be at risk of the same thing happening to their phone.

You could contact the company you purchased the phone from but my advice is go straight to the manufacturer.

They will undoubtedly wish you to return the phone so the reason for the phone to ignite can be investigated.

I am sure they will replace your phone with another model and probably a more up to date model.

I had a similar problem a few years ago and the manufacturers found a fault and they replaced my burnt out phone with a top of the range one as an apology and a thank you for bringing the problem to their attention.

You should contact the manufacturer about this. It is probably a design issue and the company should know about this.
