Do you like reclining leather seats in movie theaters?

Personally, I don’t get the appeal.

Whenever I watch an action, comedy, or horror film on a big screen with a large crowd, I want to be engaged with the movie, not feel like I’m about to take a nap while reading the newspaper. I guess the phrase “this movie had me on the edge of my seat!”, doesn’t mean anything anymore?

Also, a lot of the recliners force you to recline, because if you don’t, the back of the seat will strain your neck. This happens the most with the recliners in Regal Cinemas. Recliners also means less seats, which makes it difficult to pick a perfect viewing angle. And if you’re stuck next to an annoying moviegoer it also makes it difficult to move to a different spot.

What do you think?

I think that a reclining seat in the movie theaters would be great. Even better in planetariums so you can look up without straining your neck. I’m for it.

I love them. I can get completely positioned correctly to watch however I like. I love being able to preselect my seat and walk in just at the right time.
I do not miss standing in lines to rush into the theatre to get my seat. This to me has been the best change to the movie going experience since they beefed up the sound quality in the early 90’s.

I like them because they’re roomy and I can sit, leaning on one hip with my feet curled to the side. Then I can change to the other side. I also never minded the old, “regular” seats.

I also like that the seats are heated. I’m one who sits in a theater with my jacket on, or using my jacket as a blanket. I like all the heat I can get.

Best upgrade to movie theaters since tiered seating.

I think the seats vary widely in quality. The reclining seats in Regal Cinemas are extremely cumbersome.

Being short, I have trouble getting them to fit comfortably. Not a big plus for me in movie theaters but not something I rail against.

I’m with you, @rockfan, I don’t like it. I am little, and the recliners are not designed for someone my size. I have to take my own small throw pillow for either lumbar or neck support.

@canidmajor Meet you for a Coke?

Ha! Absolutely, @janbb

I do not like leather seats in general.
Especially during summer, when your skin sticks to it, like a Republican to a public toilet’s gloryhole.

My problem with them is they are so big they sometimes block the sound from the back.

The last time I stepped foot in a movie theater was in 1990. There’s NO movie that I can’t wait to see until it comes out on DVD or streaming. On the rare occasion that I just can’t wait, I can get it from RedBox within 30 days after release or Amazon, Disney+, or one of the other streamers will show it for an exorbitant fee. I usually can wait until the price gets down to normal!!!

KRD's avatar

@ragingloli I’m with you. If you have lather seats and it gets hot you can put a cover on it.

I don’t think I would, no.

Not crazy about them. Regal Cinema’s choice of reclining chair design sucks. Their
IMAX chairs do not recline and it still feels uncomfortable. I miss the old chairs. I can maneuver more in them.

Only one thing nice about these new chairs is you get a chance to pick which one you can sit on
at the counter.

Back in the ‘50s, the number of people going to the movies began to nosedive.
This was due, partially, to television.
It was also due to the fact that movies were being made so smoothly, people were falling asleep in the theaters. This began film producers to have harsh cuts in the films, which would awaken people as they lulled.
So now they are making comfortable seats that make it easier to sleep in.
I prefer them now because of Covid. Not sharing an arm rest with someone I don’t know isn’t inviting to me. The big chairs make me feel like I am not crowded.

@filmfann: And the row in front of you and behind you is not right on top of you, which is also nice.

I’m a fan of their comfort, although I cringe a bit not being able to see germs. And yes, they are oversized for most of us.

KRD's avatar

I cringe about that to @KNOWITALL.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@KRD Bunch of nosepickers out there haha!

At least the leather seats are easy to wipe clean than the traditional cloth seats.

canidmajor's avatar

I make sure I’m dressed when I go to the movies. It cuts way down on the skin-to-seat contact.

janbb's avatar

@canidmajor But how can you have any pancakes then?

canidmajor's avatar

@janbb I have a stunning array of special talents. :-D

I do, but rarely go to the theater. Been about 5 years.

I like leather, or fake leather, in a public setting, because it cleans up better than cloth. As far as reclining, some recliners are much better than others. I like being able to adjust my seat, but I don’t like if the seat forces me into a position that is uncomfortable.

Bigger seats and fewer seats sounds like a big positive to me.

My opinion doesn’t matter much. I rarely go to the cinema, and when I do I’m fine in traditional seats or whatever. It’s just two hours. Stadium seating is more important to me. I don’t want to worry about a very tall person sitting in front of me.

Cinemark where I used to live had a restaurant and a cafe in the movie house, and also specialized seating with seat side delivery. Here’s a link. https://www.cinemark.com/food-and-drink

I kinda like the recliners but I don’t recline them all the way back.
What I hate at the theater is subwoofers, and subwoofers are the reason I do not go to the theater any more at all.
