I tend to separate the art from the artist. Dunning-Kreuger effect is prominent in celebrities.

I also try very hard to keep politics and art seperate. But you don’t have to buy their merchandise, either.

Good luck finding a certain piece of art suddenly disgusting.

I heard a decade or so ago that Axl Rose, supposedly, was a racist.
Paradise City is playing somewhere?
I go crazy (inside, with class).

I’ve struggled with this over the years. Not just politics, but other questionable life choices.

I also try to separate art from the artist, but it’s not easy.

I said this on another thread recently…

History is littered with beautiful art made by broken and terrible people.

Politics shouldn’t come between you any more than their religion should.

It’s a personal decision; I wouldn’t tell someone else what they should do. For me, it depends on egregious the failing is. I wouldn’t go see a new Woody Allen movie now because I do believe the accusations of his pedophilia. On the other hand, some of my favorite English poets were anti-semites. Another factor for me is the time factor and whether their politics might have a current effect. I would not support a current neo-Nazi or white supremacist.

@rebbel I also heard that Axl Rose beat up his girlfriends Erin Everly, who became his wife and Stephanie Seymour. It’s hard for me to listen to his music.

@chyna Yeah, a real man, our Axl….
Well, I go “hey, there’s that asshole with that great song!”.

GNR was more a result of Izzy Stradlin and Slash IMO. That said, Axle had an impressive vocal range and was a rare talent. But yes, major asshole.

As a matter of principle, I would never listen to Putin’s First Symphony.

Usually, I keep the two separate. If they go too far I might not go to their movies or not find enjoyment in their art. I usually don’t make a big deal of it.

That depends. If the artist uses their money to help finance things that hurt our Nation then I won’t watch them. It’s no different from me choosing not to shop in a store that would have racist highering practices. I generally don’t care what people do with their money but I would prefer that I spend my money elsewhere so I know none of it would go to destroying our nation. To me, Trumpers want to destroy our nation, so if a star is a Trumper who gives to his campaign or helps promote his lies, then they won’t ever see a cent of my money.
There will always be more actors. I don’t feel I’m losing out.
They have a right to spend their money how they see fit, just the same as I do.
Now to answer your question it really depends on how much you believe in your convictions.

People call it Cancel Culture. I call it not rewarding bad behavior. The lies in this Nation have spun out of control and the main reason behind it all is money. The bigger the lie the more money they can cash in. Just look at Fox News and Alex Jones.
