For me “gamey” means strong, off, different, mature.

I’d have to be very very hungry before I eat deer meat.

I never knew what was meant by “gamey” until I tasted deer meat for the first time. Then I knew instantly what gamey meant.

Last time I had wild meat it tasted like an overpowering taste of warm pee. I don’t know how else to describe it.

I thought gamey meant a taste of rot.

I thought it meant it tasted of wild game vs domesticated “game.” Strong. I don’t like it.

I’ve had venison that was braised in wine and herbs for hours and it was incredible (It was one of the rare occasions I’ve broken my “no red meat except pork” policy). I’ve also had it in a stew. Neither time was “gamey.” The point being that I think the preparation of the meat as well as the manner of cooking plays a big role in the final flavor.

Generally what this gamey taste/texture really is has to do with the fact that the animal is nowhere near as fat as a domesticated animal raised for meat. They have had a significantly different diet and we are just not used to the flavor.

I think it is when it tastes like eating a Monopoly board or a deck of cards.

Not to be too graphic, but doesn’t the rapidity of field dressing the animal after it’s been slain have a large impact on the “gaminess” of the meat later?

I always thought of “gamey” as akin to mutton. I have had elk meat in the last few months that had a lighter flavor than some beef steaks. I had venison when I was young and have steered clear of it.

I did enjoy venison jerky, but that was soaked in spices prior to drying that it took nay “gaminess” out of the meat.

It has a lot to do with prep. The fat, the silver tendons, how it was dressed or processed. Better just keep thinking it’s gross and leave to those of us who consider it the best.

You should add butter, salt and pepper, that’s it and it’s tender and amazing.

@Dutchess_III I’m kind of picky in terms of the meat I eat. I don’t do organ meat and the like. The venison I tasted was really delicious. I wouldn’t assume that it is ALWAYS gross based on your previous experiences.

I made philly cheesesteak eggrolls with tri tip this weekend. Soooo good! Thinking about trying reubens and ham & cheese.

@KNOWITALL Do you know much about field dressing an animal? If it’s not done immediately, does that cause the animal to taste gamey? Does it need to get into a freezer right away?
