Today in the supermarket I saw “pumpkin pie spice” peanuts in a can. What is the weirdest or strangest food combo with “pumpkin pie spice” ?

Oh, there was a really weird one a couple years ago. It was mixed with something really bizarre but I can’t remember it. Honestly, i don’t get the pumpkin thing. I think it’s a thoroughly mediocre flavor. I recently was confronted with it mixed in with granola and it really did nothing for the granola.

Just not my taste.

Yes, you read that right.

Pumpkin spice seems to be a weirdly misunderstood flavor. It’s not pumpkin-flavored. Pumpkin pie spices (“pumpkin spices”) are typically cinnamon, nutmeg, and a little clove. You don’t flavor pumpkin pie with pumpkin. But some people seem to expect a pumpkinlike flavor to come with the spices.

I use those same spices in various other recipes, such as banana bread, butternut squash, and kibby. Last week I even added some to stuffed peppers.

I haven’t sampled pumpkin-spice dog food, but I’ve seen it on the shelf. That might be the weirdest.

Pumpkin spice salmon. I saw a recipe for it online.

I’m not one of those people who hates pumpkin spice (I actually like it in things you’d expect, like cookies), but I can see why it’s so hated/mocked.

I love all the smells associated with fall. Today I bought one of those cinnamon brooms they sell at Trader Joe’s. And it made the whole car smell like cinnamon. So cozy.

Like @Jeruba mentioned, most of the time it’s just the spices you would use in a pumpkin pie. Not necessarily pumpkin flavor.

I’d be down with cinnamon and nutmeg-y granola or milk. The salmon…I might need some convincing, but I’d probably be game. Not sure what to make of the dog food though!

I love both “pumpkin spices” and actual pumpkin (two very different things). Trader Joe’s has all sorts of things that have either just the spices, or the pumpkin AND the spices. I love it all.

I would go so far as to call myself a pumpkin-o-holic. I love pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, and savory baked/grilled/steamed pumpkin in all sorts of dishes. There is an Indian curry that I used to get in a restaurant, in the “before times” that was delicious! I love pumpkin puree in smoothies, and pasta sauce.

Pumpkin stuff is similar to the flavor of either butternut squash, and sweet potatoes, and yams. It’s all good, either sweet or savory.
