What's a word you hadn't heard in a long time and then heard or read?

Mine is doff. The dictionary says it means to remove an article of clothing, but I only remember hearing used in reference to removing a hat.

What about you? What old word did you hear or read recently?

Knucklehead. My brother used to use that word to describe someone acting or being stupid. I hadn’t heard it for years until I heard a man in the grocery store call someone a knucklehead that almost hit him with a buggy.
Made me smile.

Buggy. :P

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

@raum Which kind of buggy? Was it a horse-drawn wagon or a place with lots of insects or something else?

smudges's avatar

@raum Yes! I saw that in @chyna‘s answer and wondered. In my area they’re called carts. Either one could be horse-drawn though! LOL

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

@smudges That’s cool! Here, shopping carts are called wagons.

raum's avatar

@Hawaii_Jake They call them wagons there? Learn something new every day. :)

@smudges I want a horse-drawn wagon. The supermarket variety!

smudges's avatar

@Hawaii_Jake Again, could be horse-drawn! LOL

@raum Hell I’d be thrilled to have a HORSE!

We need a separate question as to what people call the shopping carts in stores.

So many great words in the Facebook Yiddish Word of the Day group especially if you are from NYC or had family that spoke Yiddish. Here’s the link. https://www.facebook.com/groups/132522033442014/?ref=share

Bombastic. It’s a good descriptive term for one of my friends.

I just came upon the word usher in Wordle. I don’t think I have ever seen it in print before, and I have not heard it used for a while.
